Day 21 -Have You Forgotten?

Do you not know?
    Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He will not grow tired or weary,
and his understanding no one can fathom. (Isaiah 40:28)

Sometimes our days come crashing in on us and we can’t help but feel defeated and a little deflated.  There are tasks to complete, chores to accomplish and deadlines to meet.  We begin our day with hope only to come home exhausted, frustrated and a little bit disillusioned by it all.  Have you been in this place?  Have you experienced this kind of day?  In Isaiah’s day, God’s people were in exile in Babylon, and things did not look good at all.  The prophet Isaiah had both words of correction as well as words of encouragement for a displaced and punished people.  Better days were on their way, God had not forgotten His people…but perhaps they had forgotten Him.

Perhaps we cannot relate to a time of exile and persecution like this, but we can relate to being forgetful in our relationship to God.  It happens, and when it does like the Prophet Isaiah’s reminder, we need a reminder of our own.  Do you not know?  Have you not heard?  The Lord is the everlasting God!  Coupled with this promise of God’s persistent love and presence is this promise:  “I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.” (2 Corinthians 6:18)

If you have forgotten this, let me remind you once more:  You are a son or daughter of the Most High!!  Perhaps our perspective needs to broaden…perhaps our dreams and our spiritual reach into this world needs to be greater…perhaps our faith can be stronger and longer lasting when we recognize just who we are because of Jesus Christ!  Be encouraged fellow Citizen and child of God!  You are highly favored and loved!  So live like it and let the world see His reflection in you!

Prayer:  Dear Lord, help me to remember your strength and power in my life today.  Guide me when I forget who it is I serve.  Thank you for making me your child!  Help me to live this out loud today!  Be with me, strengthen me with your might arms and enfold me in your protection and grace!  -Amen!

Day 20 -What Are You Afraid Of???

The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” Psalm 18:2

As a parent, I’ve seen some things you can’t unsee.
I’ve also had moments that I thought I would have a heart attack because of what one of my kids was doing.  Kids are very good at scaring their parents.  Last night was no exception.  Why is it that children become ninjas in the middle of the night?  I was sound asleep last night when both my wife and I got the sense that someone was standing over our bed.  If you’re a parent then you know where I’m going with this.  Our daughter had a nightmare and so she decided to share that nightmare with us by apparently standing over us like some sort of creepy character from the Ring or the Grudge.  I startled awake like I always do when someone is just staring at me while I sleep, my was heart racing as I struggled to regain my composure and fully awaken.

My daughter was frightened by dreams, and soon enough her twin brother, who sleeps in the same room, joined us as well.  Needless to say, it was a long night last night.  All of that to say this:  My kids knew where their safety would be found.  As parents we protect our children, even if they decide to scare the living daylights out of you in the middle of the night.  The security of Mom and Dad is known by our children, and so instinctively they come to us when they are afraid.

Isn’t it interesting that this never changes with God either?
When we become afraid, feel alone or in dire need we run to our safe, secure Rock that werock can cling to.  He is always there to provide safety and security!  His strength and light shines and frightens all of the darkness away!  He is our Savior and the One who calms the storms of this life!  I would venture like any parent, our Heavenly Father becomes afraid for us at times.  He longs to rush in and rescue us.  Perhaps it is just me, but I think of my Heavenly Father like that – fulfilling that role.  His strength is sufficient for any task and any danger.  That doesn’t mean that we go looking for trouble, but when trouble finds us, and it will, we can cling to the Rock of our Salvation!  Run to Him!  Tell Him of your fears.  Allow His mighty hands to enfold you and protect you.  Find comfort and encouragement in Him today ! He is Your Rock and Your Salvation…do not be afraid!!  So let me ask you…what are you afraid of???

Prayer:  Dear Lord, I confess that in life I have fear.  Some of them are rational, while others are irrational fears.   Help me when trouble comes my way.  Protect me from the evil one.  Rescue me when I call, and even before that, Lord, thank you for being there for me!  You are my strength today, and no matter what dangers I may face, help me to know that You are there with me!  I find comfort and strength in You, O Lord.  -Amen and amen!

Day 19 – Misunderstanding God’s Goodness…

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28

This has been a Christian mantra or something placed on a motivational poster, t-shirt or coffee mug.  But I think we misunderstand this verse.  The goodness of God was never about giving someone cancer, or someone losing their job or someone losing a loved one to death.  These are not good things at all.  It was never God’s intention to hurt His creation.  So let’s agree to stop thinking about those things as good – because they are not good things.  (wow, this devotional seems very dark…just wait, it gets better I promise)

Let’s get into the right mindset that God is NOT about causing harm to the world.  He doesn’t work that way.  Yes, He despises sin and hatred, but He doesn’t say “here’s a sickness – consider it a good thing!”  Instead, God is about bringing restoration and transformation in and through us.  That issue you might be going through right now, guess what?  God is right there beside you.  He will never leave you, and despite the troubles you might be experiencing, He loves you and even weeps with you.  He hurts when you hurt.  He wants to lead you through it, and in some instances deliver you from that trial.  Don’t look at those trials as good, or as something to “look forward to”…obviously God doesn’t wish to inflict pain on you…but despite the world’s circumstances, and the fallen-ness of it, He will make something good come from it.

What are you struggling with today?
Do you see light at the end of this tunnel?
Are you tired?  Worn out?  Angry?  tough
I know that it is easy to blame God, but just know that He wants to help and give you hope!
Are you prepared to lean on His strength?  Perhaps you are already – keep leaning on Him, He will lead you through this dark time.  For the rest of us who are not presently in a tough situation, will you pray for those that are?  There is real strength and power in the prayer of the Christ-follower.  Even if you do not know about specific details and situations, prayer for your fellow Christian brother or sister is mighty and God knows the specifics.
Do not misunderstand God’s love for you, however.  Recognize His constant care and provisions in your life right now, and give thanks for those good things!

Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to see your hand on me in these difficult days.  Although I cannot see the future and the outcome – you can.  Lead me.  I know that these things are not good and I hate feeling this way, but show me your goodness and glory.  Reveal to me your hope and joy despite the present circumstances.  Lord, I also pray for others who are in very dark places right now.  Help me to be your hope, encouragement and love to them!  Make me an instrument of your peace in the world around me today.  In your name I pray these things.   -Amen.

Day 18 -Living Shema Outloud!!

“…‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

Jesus was asked by a teacher of the law which commandment was the greatest.
They had been debating and Jesus was very good in His answers.  So when asked this question, He responds by quoting one of the pillar prayers of the Hebrew people – the Shema Yisrael.    “Love the Lord Your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all you strength…”  Then He points out that loving your neighbor as yourself is the second most important commandment.

The teacher didn’t ask which was the second most important, but Jesus tell him anyway.  Could it be that the teachers of Jesus’ day needed that reminder as well?  Perhaps we still require this kind of reminder.  These two commandments are just as true today as they were in Jesus’ day!  When we love God with EVERYTHING we are and with EVERYTHING we have, we can begin to love those around us like we love ourselves.  Isn’t it interesting that without love for God in such a holistic way, the love for others falls apart?

loveWe see this all the time though don’t we?  There is a lot of hate in our world today.  Wouldn’t it be amazing to worship and adore God so much that we naturally love our neighbors around us?  What an amazing world we would live in if we respected and loved one another because our first love was God.  Even the people of Jesus’ day questioned who their neighbors were.  In Luke, right after Jesus repeats the Shema Yisrael and speaks of loving our neighbor, one of the teachers asks “who is my neighbor?”  You can almost hear the wheels churning in this man’s mind.  Can we pick and choose who our neighbor is?  Does my neighbor look like me, have the same interest as me, perhaps have the same skin color as me?  Is “my neighbor” those I choose to associate myself with?  The answer is NO!  Jesus takes it a step further and tells them the parable of the Good Samaritan to illustrate our neighbor is more than people who look like us, talk like us, and have the same interests or cultural practices.

love2Loving God with all of our being broadens the world around us.
Loving God opens the doors to loving a broader sense of who our neighbor is.
So let me ask you, who is your neighbor that requires your love and kindness?

Prayer:  Lord help me today to see the bigger picture in this world.  I want to love you with every fiber of my being and every ounce of breath in my lungs.  Teach me to love others, beyond my comfort zone and my own prejudices.  Help me to show Christ in my words and my deeds today.  Let Your love in my life be evident to all and my I bring glory and honor to you.  In Your name I pray these things.  -Amen.

Dear Salvation Army – 3 Leaders You Can Trust…

“Leadership is not about titles, positions or flowcharts. It is about one life influencing another.”- John Maxwell

There are many leaders in our Army.
Leaders can be found in our corps, in our social service departments, in our thrift stores, in our headquarters…all the way up to IHQ and the office of the General.
But, like most things, not all leaders are the same.

Today I would like to delve into the qualifications and characteristics that make a good leader trustworthy.  What are these qualifications?  What sort of characteristics would you expect from such a person?   I’m so glad you asked.

Perhaps you have heard the phrase “trust is earned”.
Sometimes though in our Army, and in any organization for that matter, we are expected to trust those who lead, but can this be done consistently?  Have you ever had experiences that left you second guessing that trust?  I am certainly not advocating a spirit of paranoia and doubt, but I would caution that not everyone who is placed in a leadership position has the same motivations and agendas.

3 Leaders You Can Trust:

1. Leaders Who Have Integrity
integrityThe Salvation Army needs more leaders to be men and women of integrity.  I say this for all areas of leadership.  From the local officer position all the way up to the General.  We need people who will do what they say they will do while being men and women of Holiness.  Without the characteristic of holiness, a leader’s integrity cannot be completely fulfilled.  Thus, leadership must begin on our knees before our heavenly Father.  Because we will be held to account for what we do on earth.  Leaders who operate with ulterior motivations and do not have holy integrity, will falter and perhaps inflict casualties within our body of soldiers.  We are very good at pointing out the bad in others, but this godly principle of living must begin with us!  Without holiness and integrity our sphere of responsibility and leadership will crumble and find a limited impact for the Kingdom.

2. Leaders Who Are Authentic
Not only is it crucial to have trusted leaders who possess integrity, but those who also have a level of genuine authenticity.  Do you know leaders who act one way while in the pulpit realor place of leadership and conduct themselves contrary to that place of authority?  What we say and what we do should line up, and with it our REAL responses to the world around us.  There is no time to be a phony leader or a phony Christian.  We cannot have leaders of any level merely giving lip service to God, but their motives and conduct are completely contrary to their bravado.  This Army needs more authentic leaders!  We need people who are real, people who know what it means to struggle with life, people who get it.  This army is in need of leadership that has empathy not apathy.  We need more candid conversations and less brow beatings and starchy high pulpit speak.  We have to have a spirit of trust and an understanding that our Army is made up of people who are fallible and require compassion and grace.  We need more leaders who will go to the gates of hell for people and soldiers in need instead of delegating or sending others to do their jobs.  The leader that can be trusted will come to your level and spend time talking with you about the things that matter.  Can you be a trusted leader?  Do you have a heart to serve?  Are you moved with compassion for those you lead?  Then be authentic, and leader with authenticity, this Kingdom of God doesn’t have a place for two-faced leadership.

3. Leaders Who Are Accountable
accountLeaders who pass the buck are not leaders of accountability.
If we as leaders do not possess a spirit of accountability in us, then we cannot be trusted.
James 3:1 tells us that the higher our area of responsibility goes, so does our level of accountability to God.  “… let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment.” (James 3:1 NKJV)

They say that power corrupts absolutely.  This does not end at places of political power and in government, this is true of the Church and of The Salvation Army as well.  Be aware of ownerthe power that is entrusted to you.  Know that final authority is not you – but rather God.  Even if you do not have someone who is currently over you in authority, your actions and motivations will be judged in accordance to Godly principles when we stand before Him.  I do not say this to sound threatening or vindictive, I say this because I believe there are those in numerous places of authority who are power hungry and motivated not by a spirit of service but to be served.  This is a very real danger in all levels of leadership.  If we are to be leader who can be trusted, we must possess a level of accountability towards those we serve in leadership both above and below us (for lack of a better term).  Is it still Thy Kingdom come, or has it come “My Kingdom come”?

Questions to Ponder Today:
Can we be trusted leaders?
Who are we accountable to?
Do I struggle with authenticity in my ministry and place of authority right now?
Is integrity and holy living a part of my identity as a leader?
Am I currently giving lip service to God, but my spiritual life is a wreck?
IF I struggle with these areas of my leadership, how can I correct that?

These are just three qualities of Godly leadership…I know that there are more and that this is just a primer.  What do you think?  What list would you suggest?  We look forward to reading your comments, thoughts and concerns!

Something more for our Army to Ponder today.
To God be the glory!

Day 17 – Lost And Found!!

“…suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it?” Luke 15:8

One of my sons lost something very important to him – his key to his locker.  In that locker was all of his text books for all of his classes.   The night before school, he came to us all stressed out and worried that he wouldn’t find it.  We reassured him that in the morning we would find it together; and so bright and early the next day we got up and searched the house for his missing key.  We searched the basement level and then we came up to the main level and searched.  Finally, in his room, on the floor amongst the cluttered mess of scattered clothing and other knick-knacks we found his lost key.  He was relieved and ready to begin his day with more promise, because what was once lost was now found!

lostThis reminded me of another story. A story that Jesus told.  It was about a woman who had lost one of her ten silver coins.  This may have been all that she owned in the world, and losing just one of those coins would have been devastating to her.  So she tears her house apart looking for this lost coin until she finds it.  Then she calls her neighbors together to celebrate with her.  Jesus told this tale to illustrate just how important every person on this earth is to Him.  He doesn’t want to lose anyone along the way.  In fact, just before this story Jesus told another story – the parable of the lost sheep, and at the very end of that story He said, “I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.”

Imagine that!  Heaven rejoices when the lost is found!
Perhaps that gives us a glimpse as to how important it is to love people around us.
You never know what has happened or is going on in their lives.  Perhaps such a person will cross your path today.   Can you be the very hands and feet of Christ?  Will listen to the Holy Spirit’s promptings as all of Heaven anxiously waits for that one lost soul to be found again?  All it takes is our willingness to say “yes” to the Holy Spirit and bring hope to that poor soul.

So, how about it, will you help with the lost and found today?

Prayer:  Dear Lord, help me to see the people around me today.  May the words I choose to say be a blessing and not a curse to those I meet.  Help me to show Christ’s love with words and actions!  And if you prompt me to talk to someone, give me the words to speak.  Thank you for this blessing and promise of a new day!  In your name I pray all of these things.  -Amen!

Day 16 -Living In God’s Sanctuary…

“Lord, who may dwell in your sanctuary?  Why may live on your holy hill?  He whose walk is blameless and who does what is righteous…” Psalm 15:1-2a

When we choose to follow Christ in our lives and live for Him every day, we are not only called Sons and Daughter of God, but we have access to His sanctuary.

What does that mean?
It means that the very presence of God can remain with us every moment of every day.
In essence we have the Creator of the Universe with us to guide and provide.  In ancient times the only ones who could gain access to the Holy of holies were the priests who kept themselves ceremonially clean.  The Holy of holies was the place where the very presence was said to reside.  On the day and hour of Christ’s death, the curtain, which separated the temple from the Holy of holies was torn from top to bottom.  tornThis was more than coincidental, this signified God’s presence would no longer just reside in the temple, but He could be accessed by everyone all because of what Christ did on the cross.

How does this make you feel, knowing that God’s presence is accessible and readily available for you and me?  He longs to be a part of our day.  He wants to fellowship with us, to commune and guide us in our day.  When we enter into this fellowship, we are in the very sanctuary of God!  Each of us are called to be set apart for God, so how we live and how we interact with the world around us matters!  We can live as Kingdom people as we enter into His sanctuary every day!  May we walk into His presence and live this kingdom living today!

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for allowing us access to you because of your son Jesus Christ!  I want dwell in your sanctuary everyday!  Be with me today, and as I interact with others, bring to my mind your grace, peace and love.  In your name I pray all of these things amen!

Day 15 – When The Going Gets Tough…

“We put no stumbling block in anyone’s path, so that our ministry will not be discredited. Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way;…” 2 Corinthians 6:3-4

Have you heard the phrase “when the going gets tough, the tough get going”?  There are no promises of easy living and smooth sailing in the Christian experience.  Jesus doesn’t say “follow me and everything will come up roses!” No, this decision to Live for Christ is one of the hardest life decisions one ever makes!  It is a promise to live for Him no matter what comes our way.  Through the good and bad times.  In so doing, our witness becomes more than just  The words we choose to say to those around us.  Instead our first witness is seen before we ever open our mouths.  Our actions speak louder than words!

So let me ask you, what kind of witness are your actions displaying for those around you?

I must confess that there have been times when I know that my actions have been a stumbling block to others.  I’m not proud of that, but it has happened, and will likely happen again.  Have you had similar experiences too?  I would venture a guess and say yes you have.

In all seasons…in all days of this coming week…in our shopping, leisure, work, hobbies, family and public interactions – may our witness be seen and then heard!  May we never become a stumbling block to those around us!  We are living for so much more than just our lives now!  What we say in what we do actually matters.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for this day and the blessings that this day has offered.  Help me tomorrow to be your witness in all that I do and say!  Guide me so that my words and my actions are pleasing to you, and are a sweet aroma for others!  Help me in those spaces where my witness is not evident.  Strengthen me for the difficult moments of my day!  I want to serve you with more than just my words, but with my life as well.  Show me what that looks like today!  In your name I pray these things.  -Amen!

Day 14 – All Your Anxiety

Philippians 4:6  (NIV) “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”
I know what you’re thinking, easier said than done, right?  We spend a lot of time consumed with worry and stress over things that we cannot control.  That doesn’t mean we don’t stop trying, but is it comforting to know that we have One who intercedes and hears our prayer?!

Stress can become our prison if we allow it to consume us.  The anxiety that we may feel can also bring about other health concerns.  Letting go isn’t easy, but perhaps we have to begin by taking a step back from the problems at hand.  Get some perspective.  Look at something else instead of the trouble of stress you are facing.

Could it be that even within this moment it is a test of your faith?  Do you trust God to help you through it, even if He doesn’t deliver you from it?  In the grand scheme of things, how bad is your trouble really?  Has God not overcome worse in our world?  What makes you think that He won’t be there for you now?

Paul tells us to bring everything to God through prayer and petition in a spirit of Thanksgiving.  That seems crazy to thank God for your troubles as well as your joys, but in so doing, we will experience His very real presence and power.  So make a list of your troubles, both big and small, and bring them before God in prayers of Thanksgiving.  Thank God for the challenges and for His presence.  Perhaps this could be an opportunity for you to test your faith (and perhaps your patience).

Prayer: Dear Lord, I confess that I have troubles and stress in my life.  Help me to have some perspective on these things.  Allow me to have a deeper faith as I wait on you to lead me through.  Be with me now as I lay these petitions of Thanksgiving at your feet.  Today I pray for (list your troubles, anxiety and stress – name them, even say them out loud).  Close by thanking God for leading you through your past stresses and have faith that He will deliver you through these very present troubles.  -Amen.

Day 13 – What Good Can Come From There?

“…Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.   Nazareth!  Can anything good come from there?’ Nathaniel asked.  “Come and see,” said Philip.  (John 1:45-46)

Have you ever felt as if you weren’t good enough to be a disciple of Christ?
Perhaps you have uttered similar words about yourself.  Things like “Lord, surely you could pick someone better…someone more equipped…someone more eloquent…someone smarter than me.”  I know many who struggle with their own self-worth.  I also know of others who feel very insecure about their own gifts and abilities.

The important thing to remember is that when you say “yes” to God, He will provide the means.  Moses had a speech problem, and was very self-conscious about speaking in front of people, let alone the Pharaoh of Egypt…so God provided him help.  (Exodus 4:10)
When faithfulness to God is evident, and we say yes – Jehovah Jireh (My provider) will provide what we need.

Nathaniel’s words “Nazareth!  Can anything good come from there?” were not directed at himself, but rather at Philip’s proclamation of finding Messiah there in that town.  Jesus entered Nathaniel’s life and told him things no one knew, which lead Nathaniel to boldly declare, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.”  That is an amazing declaration at a first visit with Jesus!

Christ wants to do something amazing in your life today!
He longs to equip you beyond what you see in yourself!  No matter where you come from, no matter your background or list of insecurities, He wants to make you his disciple!
The question “what good can come from there?” can be answered by a face to face encounter with our Savior.  Will you talk to Him today?

Prayer: Lord I confess my own insecurities to you today.  I am not equipped for the things you want me to do.  Help me to see You for who You are!  Also remind me that no demographic or community is unimportant to you- and that like diamonds in the rough, you can will raise up godly people and provide the means to have your glory seen.  Speak to my heart today.  Encourage me and allow me to your humble servant.  In your name I pray these things.  -Amen.
