Day 44 “We Hate The ‘S’ Word…”

It’s a word everybody hates.
For some it means relinquishing our freewill.
For others it means becoming a slave…and naturally, no one wants to be a slave.
Still others thing of this word as strange and even evil.

s-wordIt’s the word ‘Submit’…as in submit someone else.
-submit to the rules…
-submit to the will or whim of others…
-submit who you are to someone else’s identity.
This content of the ‘S’ word certainly seems negative and cause us to never utter it again let alone live in submission to anything other than our own freewill.

But what would you do if God requires this from you?
How do we consider the ‘S’ word then in the context of who God is and desires from us?
Even then, many (including myself) struggle with the notion of full-submission to God.
James 4:7 says, “Submit yourselves then, to God.  Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

This type of submission isn’t something that will hurt us, instead it will heal us. submit2 Submission to God means we can finally become all that God knows we can be.  There is this potential within all of us, but it can only be accessed and fully realized when we completely submit ourselves to God’s will.  This is probably the most difficult thing we will ever do.  Full submission to God doesn’t mean that we will lose our identity, no, it means that we will finally have our full identity.  We are called sons and daughters of God…when we finally submit to Him, this title becomes our identity.  The difficulty is letting go and trusting Him.  It requires us to say, “Lord, my life is in your hands!”  When we submit in this way, the temptations of the evil one will diminish and we can resist sin – through the power of the Holy Spirit.

You might now be there yet – letting go and submitting fully to God…but He longs for you to take that step!  He will not harm you.  He loves you and desires His people be holy.

Prayer:  Lord, I confess today that I struggle with full-submission to you in my life.  I fear letting go because it could mean that I have to make changes in my life.  Help me Lord to seek you and to let go.  I want to live for you in my life.  So in my day today, show me what this submission looks like.  I desire to be like you.  -Amen.

Day 45 – “Love Bites…”*

(love)…it keeps no record of wrongs.  Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” 1 Corinthians 13:5b-6

Today love is the topic for our consideration.
What is love?
How do we get it?
How do we keep it?

donaldOf course on a day like Valentine’s day, the expressions are everywhere – in the stores, in the flower shops, on commercials…you can’t go anywhere without seeing the evidence of love.  Unfortunately you can go many places and also see the void that love leaves.  This emotion, expression and way of living can be broken.  Many have experienced the brokenness of love – and it deeply hurts.  It happens when we become vulnerable to someone else.  It happens when we allow ourselves to trust someone and that trust gets broken.  Love, at times truly bites!

You can only imagine the hurt God must have felt when humanity broke His heart in the garden.  Adam and Eve walked with Him daily.  They told Him of their day.  They, creation and Creator loved each other.  But then we broke God’s heart and as punishment we were kicked out of that perfect love and into a place where atonement had to be found.  Thankheart goodness for God’s persevering, perfect love, because He made a way for us to get back to Him in the most outrageous and compassionate way – His Son.  Jesus died in our place.  While we were yet sinners Jesus died for us (Romans 5:8).  This kind of love came at an extreme cost – Death on a cross…the shedding of blood (Holy blood)…the sacrifice of the Lamb for we the hopeless, unfaithful, and broken sinner.  THIS is the love that bites.  This is the love that lasts…this is the love that Christ brings to you and me – an undeserving, love full of grace and mercy.

That love swings both ways though…will we love Him back?  Will we also reflect that love into the world?  Will we seek to be like Christ in our love for the unloved or unlovable?

Prayer:  Dear Lord, thank you for loving me!  I know that at times I have not loved you back, and I have not always lived for you.  Be with me today to express this love that I have in my life.  Help me to share that love to the world around me.  Lord, you are with me – help me to love even the unlovables in my life today.  -Amen.

Day 42 -“Kill Em With Kindness”

When Jesus commanded us to love our enemies, he really meant it.   Perhaps we play that game…you know the one I’m talking about – then one where we ask, “well, what does Enemy really mean?”  Sometimes we like to pick and choose who we “think” our enemies are…but never in our wildest dreams does it mean “THAT” person (you know who I’m talking about)…but indeed that is who Jesus means.  (Sorry)
love
Our enemies might never love us back, nor even show us an ounce of kindness, yet we are called to love them.  Isn’t it bazaar that we have been given that command by Jesus…and He took it to the extreme when he allowed those who hated Him to crucify Him on the cross?!  I mean, that is true love isn’t it?  It’s a kind of love that doesn’t have strings attached.  It’s a kind of love that, even if not reciprocated, is given freely.  This kind of love has truly turned enemies into friends over the course of history and permitted the Holy Spirit to work within people and the issues they had been dealing with.  Perhaps we do not know why THAT person treats others so poorly…perhaps they themselves are hurting or have been hurt in the past.  When we open the doors to even THOSE people, we begin to comprehend how deep and how wide the love of Jesus truly is.

So…kill em with kindness.
Questions:
-Do you have one of THOSE people in your life right now?
-How might you show love to them even if it is never reciprocated?
-Begin by praying for that person or those circumstances!

Prayer:  Dear Lord, help me to love the people in my life who are difficult to love.  Guide me today as I attempt to live for you in every aspect of my life.  Be with me.  In your name I pray these things.  -Amen.

Dear Salvation Army, 3 Smart Strategies To Army Mission…

Dear Salvation Army Soldier & Friends, our mission doesn’t exist without those that push the mission and strive to see it succeed!  Without soldiers and friends working so tirelessly together in an effort to meet human need in Jesus’ name, we will fail and our efforts will be in vain.  With that being said, we serve more than just the army ranks.  For officers come and officers go, and our appraisal of those wearing red may increase or decrease depending on the character of each.  But collectively we are the army.  But without Christ at the head of our army we will be without direction and hope.

It is my prayer that we keep our eyes ever on Christ as we dole out our policy and mission steps in our world.  Dare I say that there have been times when policy and administrative decisions have not made sense and/or were not made with Christ in mind at all.  Such moments in our history, I would hope are few and far between and I am instead given over to the notion that we ought to pray for each and every leader that is appointed to lead this Army.  I cannot imagine the enormity of such a mantel, yet it is thrust on many who would deem themselves quite unworthy of it.  But, beware to those who think they deserve such a mantel, even power and leadership in our army can corrupt.  So pray in earnest for one another so that we do not fall into such a temptation of pride, ego and personal ambition.

Here are three smart primer strategies to our Army mission.  There are more subtopics and conversations to be had within this pondering…after you read these starting points, why not tell us what YOU think and what we can add to this list!

1.  Leaders – listen to the “Boots on the ground!”

bootsI cannot stress how important it is for leaders of all positions to listen to those who are actively engaged on the ground in the fight!

There are certainly Church roles that we possess in our movement, some are appointed and gifted in: administration, some in pastoring, some evangelism…and so on, yet we all must do our very best within the positions that we have been given to glorify God and to edify and encourage each other!  Leaders who simply dictate and dole out policy but rarely listen to the boots on the ground will eventually be resented and our mission will become bogged down.  Take the time to listen to those who see the need every day!  Sometimes we as leaders have to have the guts to admit when the plan we plotted isn’t working and perhaps there is a better, more effective way.  Swallow your pride and adapt!  This goes for every position of leadership from the corps setting all the way up!

savesWe cannot afford to have polarizing visions when we should all be seeking to remain mission minded and focused.  There’s no time for that!   Leaders who listen and then lead have a better chance at successfully navigating and accomplishing their objectives in mission!  If leaders only dictate from their offices that are tucked away from mission we will fail because administration can only meet mission when it has its ear to the ground and a heart to serve in the capacity of servant-leader.    Enough with the old guard of “my way or the highway” brass!  Yes be strict on mission-mindedness but compassionate on leading and shepherding!  Be a shepherd first and listen!

2.  Boots on the ground – Pray for and love your leaders, trust them and then engage in the spiritual warfare while befriending the lost!

do

There’s no time to jostle about and deciding which leader you will follow or trust.  There is too much at stake, too much to lose in forward progress as an army!  If we spend too much time worrying about the internal workings of our army, we will lose sight of those we are entrusted to serve and love!  Bring the mission of the lost into focus – make it your priority to keep this mission going!  Be the gate keepers of Hell so that no one slips by you and into that place of ultimate depravity!  Stand as the bridge builder who brings hope to your community!  Worry less about what others (even leadership) might think and more about what God might think with our inactions!  Get on with it!!  Fight on and be the voice for those without one.  The very progression of our army depends upon the movement of these vital infantry boots!  You will stand knee deep in the muck and mire of people’s sin and sadness.  You will witness the hopeless single mother who is struggling to put food on the table, or the children who come to your program that you know are currently living in awful places and conditions.  You must take action!

Love those who lead you.  Trust that God has placed them there to help you accomplish this mission together!  Pray for each other and for those who will come knocking on your door in search of help!  We cannot progress the good news of Jesus Christ and bring hope to a dying world if we are not first Holy people who are taking up our crosses and following Him!  We cannot look like the world and act like the world.  We are set apart to do mighty things, we cannot lack anything especially faith that God will pave this path for us!

3.  Look outside “The Bubble”!

bubble

Lastly, do not get bogged down in your own bubble that you become ignorant of how God might be working in our world!  Be in-tune with Him!  Do not live in your corps buildings and your Divisional or territorial offices and forget to peer out the windows and walk the streets!  God is not static and He does not want us to become static!  Look beyond what we have already accomplished!  Don’t just maintain and do the same things over and over again especially if these things (or programs) are not bringing people to Christ any longer! Explore, study, become students of knowledge and strategy!  Read!!  There is this notion that any organization and mission can become so internal that it’s almost incestuous in developing its methods of mission, evangelism and mission.  Break this mold!  Take risks, and don’t be afraid to fail – even a hundred times (or more)!   We cannot live in our Army bubbles and expect people to come to us!  We have to go to them!  We have to think outside the box (or corps).  We have to stop living in the past or the glory days all the while missing countless opportunities to make history and break new ground!  If we expect revival we have to make revolution happen in our army!

pop I think sometimes what keeps us in our bubbles is the fear of what leadership might do if we try new things that don’t necessarily “look Army”.  Is there fear of reprisal and punishment for not maintaining the status quo?  Perhaps it’s time to pop the bubble!
Perhaps it’s time to refocus and realign our motives and mindsets on the mission of this world-wide movement!  But we cannot do that unless we become risk-takers and break the bubble comfort and tradition.

Day 41 “Facing The Giant”

Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine.
-1 Samuel 17:40

When David stood before Goliath, he didn’t come with years of battle experience, or with the armor Saul had offered to him, instead he did was came naturally.  David selected five smooth stones from the riverbed and he brought his sling – these were tools he used frequently while shepherding.  giant

It is interesting that God usually works with things that are already in existence or innate within us.  David used a sling to slay a giant and it was already a learned discipline.  God does that same with us as well.  The challenges that we face in life might seem daunting at times.  Perhaps it is rather telling if the only thing we experience is peace – something might be wrong, or perhaps we aren’t challenging ourselves anymore.  When this happens, we should be asking ourselves questions like – “What am I afraid of?” or “Why am I not pushing myself as I once did?”   Sometimes we’re tired from the fight and so we avoid the next challenge that comes our way.

King Saul and the people of Israel were afraid of the challenges of the giant.  They didn’t respond to his calls to fight – how could they?  He was HUGE and his weapons looked fearsome.  They feared they wouldn’t stand a chance against him in a fight.  David showed up to drop off home baked goods and get a report for his father, only to discover God’s people quaking in their boots…so David stepped up.

fear2Sometimes we don’t get a choice with which giants  we have to face.  We have to press onward and actually face them, because if we don’t they won’t just go away and we will be powerless and frozen in our fears.  Facing the giants also means reliance on a strength that isn’t our own.  God will provide you the strength that you need, but it also requires us to admit that we need help and that we cannot do it on our own.  When we let go of this nothing of going it alone, we are freed from the shackles of self-doubt and self-reliance.

So how about it?
What sort of giants are you facing right now?
Have you lived in fear for far too long?
Perhaps it’s time to stop hiding in fear and doubt and instead live in victory and strength!
God will be there each step of the way, but will you trust Him?

Prayer:  Dear Lord, I place before you these fears that I have in my life right now.  There are giants that I am facing and I don’t know how to combat them alone.  Help me dear Lord.  Protect me in these battles.  Lead me to victory.  Use me Lord for your glory, not mine.  In your name I pray all of these things.  -Amen.

Day 40 – “Do You Love Your Frienemy?”

You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you…” Matthew 5:43-44

It easy to love those who reciprocate that expression, it is a lot harder when that love is only one way.  Jesus takes the teaching of loving your neighbor to a whole new level when we tells those listening to love your enemies too.  Loving your enemies is extremely hard to do, especially if there is still resentment and hurt involved.  How could Jesus expect us to love THOSE people?  We might say to God, “I can’t love that person, he has said unkind things to and about me.”  or “God, you must be mistaken, that person is hateful and I don’t even think his mother loves him.”  Regardless of how we may feel, this kind of love does not naturally happen, but Christ displayed it for us in how he died.

Jesus didn’t have to die on the cross.
He could have refused, he certainly had the power to do so, and yet he did die…by the hands of those who HATED him.  He poured out his life upon those who were his enemies and friends.  His death signified our life.  …”But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions.”  (Ephesians 2:4)   We were his frienemies…but we were dead because of the things we had done.  Yet Jesus came and loved even his enemies, which happened to be all of us because we were blind in our sin.
friends
This calling to love our enemies isn’t just for the enemy or the person who has hurt us or dislikes us…this calling to love is as much for them as it is for us.  When we choose to love in this way, we can begin to let go of the trappings of resentment, anger, revenge, malice, and hate.  Loving even the unlovable lifts the burden from us that used to hold us captive and bound to this world.  This isn’t a fake or phony kind of love either, no, instead when we begin to love God with our whole heart, soul and mind, we begin to realize just how much grace and mercy plays into this relationship.  What I mean is, we don’t deserve this love from God…and neither do our enemies…and yet like Christ, we must give it freely.  This might be the hardest thing you ever do – let go of the hurt, the grudges and the hate and simply love even your frienemy…without strings attached or any ulterior motives.

heartDon’t let hate rule you.
Don’t let it hold you as its slave anymore.
Release it, surrender it to Christ’s perfect love and allow Him to transform and shape you with his grace and mercy.

Prayer:  Lord today I ask that you soften my heart towards those who seem unlovable.  Regardless of how they feel towards me and what they may do to me, help me to turn the other cheek as you work within my life to transform it.  I want to be your reflection to the world and this includes even those who do not like me.  Fill me with your grace and mercy today.  May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight.  Oh Lord my strength and my redeemer -Amen.

Day 39 “Have You Unfollowed God?”

These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me...” Matthew 15:8

Have you unfollowed God?
godI would imagine most of us would say “no”.
We wouldn’t even think about doing something like that…and yet our actions sometimes speak louder than words.  We praise Jesus one minute and the next we curse someone who has irritated us.  We acknowledge God on Sunday, but forget to include him in our work or school week.  In some ways, we conveniently unfollow God and we don’t even realize it.

I don’t know about you but I don’t want to be labeled by Jesus as one whose heart is far from him…and yet, if I’m honest it sometimes is.  There are many distractions in life.  There are many time consuming efforts that I engage in that do not edify me and preoccupies my time.  Perhaps it’s more like my mind has unfollowed God, because I have failed to include him and invite him even into my thought patterns.

Paul writes in Romans 12:2b “…be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will.”  When we allow god2this transformation to take place within our minds – change happens.  We check the box to follow God again.  We are then able to filter what we allow into our minds which bleeds over into our actions.  Without this transformation of the mind and the inclusion and fellowship of God into our lives, we will live but live unfulfilled, empty lives.  This sounds stark and cold, but the reality is that we were created with this very relationship in mind.  If we either consciously or subconsciously unfollow God, we break this relationship and in our hearts we acknowledge that there is something missing, but we can’t quite put our finger on it.  If you’re there right now, perhaps its time to reconnect with God.  Perhaps it’s time to acknowledge the many distractions that have taken His place.  We can try and try to fill that void with other things, but nothing will fill that God-shaped hole.  god3

Make it your desire to follow after God today!
Train your thoughts, and renew your mind…need help?  Ask Him, he’s always available and ready to give you strength.

Prayer:  Dear Lord, I confess that sometimes I have unfollowed you.  I have failed to include you in my day.  I desire today to converse with you and to include you in it all – the good, the bad and the downright ugly.  Lead me Lord.  I long for your fellowship, and a constant conversation with you.  Help me in this discipline of presentness.  I want to show up, I want to be present with you through my day today.  Grant me your strength through the difficult moments of this day, and allow me your discernment in the decisions that must be made, both great and small.  Lord, be in them all today.  I choose to follow you Lord.  -Amen.

Day 38 – “The Landmarks of Everest”

…So the Israelites did as Joshua commanded them. They took twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, as the Lord had told Joshua; and they carried them over with them to their camp, where they put them down.  Joshua set up the twelve stones that had been in the middle of the Jordan at the spot where the priests who carried the ark of the covenant had stood. And they are there to this day.”  Joshua 4:8-9

I recently read with great interest an article about Mount Everest.  In this fascinating

bodies
Bodies still remain on the mountain and are used as landmarks.

article, the writer described how Mount Everest is a grave to over 200 climbers who didn’t make it down from the mountain.  Some froze to death, others fell, while still others simply ran out of oxygen.  The thing about these large mountainous grave sites – once on the mountain it is near impossible to recover the bodies, and so to this day, these bodies remain frozen in time and visible to those who climb.  These fallen climbers not only commemorate the dangers of climbing this daunting mountain, but they now also serve as landmarks to other climbers.  Out of these tragic deaths has come life and in some way, these once living landmarks are making the climb easier for others to carefully mark out their steps as the ascend the mountain.

This brought to mind the story of Joshua in the bible. (Read Joshua 4:8-9)  He had become the new leader of the people of Israel.  He had replaced Moses and was attempting to finally see the promised land.  As they prepare to cross the Jordan and into this new land, Joshua instructs the twelve tribes to place a stone into the river.  Imagine these large rocks (12 in all)  being placed one on top of another.  This was to be a landmark.  A reminder of God’s promise-fulfilled .  This was to help generations after this one to see and to remember God’s faithfulness to those who love and serve Him.  This would be a memorial place that  grandparents could point to and tell their grandchildren about how God had provided when their generation was homeless and wandering.

stonesThere are many other places in scripture where people have left their landmarks so that others who came after them would know of this great God.  Some landmarks commemorated great grief and loss, while others commemorated great victory and joy.  All of these served to provide a means of safer passage to the next generation.  This makes me wonder what sort of landmarks we are constructing in our own lives.  How are we paving the way for our children and our grandchildren?  What sort of legacy are we leaving behind for others to follow?  Will they commemorate an honorable holy disciple of Christ through the testimony of our lives, or will they use our story us as a warning?  I pray that we desire to pave the way through a life of godly living and in so doing, leave legacy that others wish to follow as they ascend this path of holiness.

Prayer:  Dear Lord, help me to mark out my days with care and prayer.  Light this path before me.  May my testimony be more than words, but fully realized in my love for you and those around me.  Lead me today on this path of righteousness.  -Amen.

Day 37 “Thy Kingdom, Not My Kingdom”

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”  -Matthew  6:33

Yesterday, we explored the topic of persistent prayer, and how this world needs more persistent prayer warriors.  This thing called prayer can be the most effective tool that we have in our spiritual arsenal.  Disciplined prayer warriors can change the world, and I believe we at a place in history that requires more prayer for our world than ever before!

As we ponder this idea of prayer, we inevitably search our thoughts and our hearts for the Seek First the Kingdommost important things to pray for.  Our families are brought to mind.  Our personal concerns and our stressors are also brought to the forefront.  When we pray these things are important and good to pray for.  We also should remember that we are Kingdom people, and as Kingdom people, our priority to Christ and His Kingdom should also be high on that list.  When Jesus taught His disciples how to pray the spirit of humility and servanthood were spoke:  “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done…”

How can we make God’s Kingdom a priority today?
How can we emphasize God’s will not our will be done today?
Is there a rebellious spirit within us that struggles with these components of submission to God today?  It is not easy to humble ourselves in this way.  We might fight against submitting our will to God’s will, but knowing He cares and loves us and desire to light our path ought to bring comfort and peace even if we struggle with trusting Him.

Seeking God’s kingdom and His righteousness is never easy, but does bring us peace when we shift the focus from “me first” to God first.  There is a lightening of the burden when we allow God to carry it for us.  We don’t have to go it alone.  We have One who stands ready to help and to love us.  He comes to our level and desires fellowship and provides assurance and hope.  Thus, when we pray today…seek His kingdom before we seek ours.  As we talked about yesterday, be persistent in these conversations…and start off with accepting His kingdom first and seek after it with your life, heart, soul, mind.

Prayer:  Lord I long to live for your kingdom alone.  Help me in this discipline of pray and submission to you.  You know that this is not easy for me.  I struggle with taking control and selfishness.  I want to seek after you and your righteousness today.  I will not worry about tomorrow, but I will seek your kingdom in my life today.  Grant me your strength for what ever comes my way today.  Walk with me and help me when I become distracted and frustrated.  I pray for those that I will come into contact with today, allow me to show compassion, grace and love to all those I meet.  Lord, your will be done in my life today.  -Amen.

Day 36 – “Persisting In Prayer”

And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?” Luke 18:6-8

The power of prayer is vital and necessary for all believers!
This discipline of solitude and conversation to God is also crucial.  This is our lifeline.  This is our source of reconnecting to not only all of creation, but the creator!  Prayer is also the realignment of our wants and needs and God’s desire for us.  We can often get ahead of God.  We plot, we plan, we make requests of God and at times these are more like wishes for a genie and not conversation to the Almighty.

Jesus told His disciples that their prayer life should be persistent and ongoing.
He used this parable of a persistent widow to illustrate for them.  This widow did not relent or quit until this godless judge gave her the justice she deserved.  True disciples of Christ ought to do the same thing when it comes to prayer.

Prayer Attention Deficit Disorder…
distractionsOkay, I confess, I made the above disorder up, but it does accurately describe our prayers sometimes doesn’t it?  We pray like a kitten plays with yarn…its great until something more interesting comes along.  We have so many distractions in our world today.  The sounds outside.  Our cell phones.  Checking our social media feed on various platforms.  We live in a very distracting world.  How can we even focus on concentrated prayers when we have all of this distraction around us?  We need quiet.  We must find spaces of solitude so that we can converse with God.  It doesn’t have to be long winded prayers full of “Thees” and “Thous”.  We don’t have to have all of the right things to say either.  Just take five minutes of concentrated time (with no distractions) today and pray.  Start off by praying for your needs (not wants).  Give God thanks for answered prayers.  Then focus on your immediate family…you friends…your coworkers…your boss…your neighbor…and so on.  If it helps put a timer on so that you know when to stop praying.  But commit to just five minutes of prayer each day this week.  At first it may seem very hard to focus in on five minutes.  For some of us, it might seem like an eternity.  But pray and inquire of God what you should pray for too…His Holy Presence with inform and guide you in your conversations.  It will take practice, so do not become frustrated when you don’t accomplish this discipline at first.  Keep trying.  We need more persistent prayer warriors now more than ever in our churches and in our world.   He is calling you and me to be such people of prayer!

Prayer:
Dear Lord I pray for the issues going on in my life right now.  You know my stresses and my concerns.  You know my frustrations and my passions.  I pray that you light my path and direct my steps this day.  Help me in these conversations with you.  I live in a very distracted world and I confess I am not always readily available to talk to you because of these distractions.  I long to be more disciplined and persistent in my prayers to you.  Lead me Lord in these conversations.  Direct my thoughts and give me the passion to live for You today.   In Your name I pray all of these things.  -Amen.
