Day 9: Fecal Of The Mouth…

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” Ephesians 4:29
potty
Do you remember getting your mouth washed out with soap?
Perhaps you do, and I would imagine that soapy taste still lingers to this day.  Parents would do this to try and instill wholesome verbal skills in their children.

But this fecal of the mouth doesn’t end with the use of profanity, it continues into all of the negative comments we might make in an average day.  We might complain about things.  We might constantly criticize without any kind of constructive counterpoints.  All we are doing is essentially spewing verbal fecal matter around us.  That sounds disgusting doesn’t it?  Well it is.

mouthNo one wants to hang out with a negative person all the time do they?
They tend to bring the party down.  As Christians we are called to be set apart from how the World tells us to live.  This passage goes way beyond using swear words, and reminds us of the necessity to build each other up instead of tear each other down.  So when Paul says “let no unwholesome words come out of your mouth”, he is reminding Christ-followers to be mindful of what they say – which becomes their testimony to the rest of the world around us.  The words we choose can be the very words of Christ, or they can be the words of Satan.  That sounds harsh, but the reality is that words can cut deeper than any blade, and words can maim or encourage beyond what we could ever see.  Words are that important!  And how we choose to use them can either bless or curse the souls of those around us.

So How About You?
How are your speech patterns?
Are there areas in your life that you find difficult and you end up catching yourself speaking with fecal, unwholesome speech?  Do you constantly have to fight against going negative.  Does this permeate your entire outlook on life and on others around you?  If so, how can you change this pattern of unwholesome talk?  We can blame other people and situations, that would be the easy way out…but only when we take responsibility for our own speech and rein in our thoughts, will we ever seen measurable spiritual growth.  It begins with you, it begins with me.

Prayer:
Dear Lord, help me with my tongue today.
Remind me that I am set apart for you.  Cleanse me of malice and negative thinking that seems to bleed out into my speech.  I want to be a kingdom builder, not one who tears down.  Show me what it means to be edifying and encouraging to others.  Help me with the words I choose to speak.  My the words of my mouth and meditations of my heart be acceptable to You, Oh Lord my Strength and my Redeemer.  -Amen

Day 7: Which God Do You Serve?

Listen, my beloved brethren: did not God choose the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him?”  James 2:5

When asked this question, most of us would say “I serve God the Father, Jesus Christ His Son…this is the God I serve!”  But I would like to challenge you on this today, and in this challenge I hope we might recognize a very real and present danger in our lives right now.  What is that danger you ask?  Money – riches, fame, glorification of lifestyles that are not acceptable to God.
look2
This pursuit of recognition on the world’s stage is wrought with sacrifices that will hollow us out and leave us mere shells of who God knows us to be.  It is interesting that longing for wealth and recognition isn’t just the pursuit of money, but it is the pursuit of acceptance and accolades from the world itself.  The trap can be – “What does the world tell me I should be” or, “How can I impress the world with my Instagram, Twitter, Facebook accounts?”   We have a lot of people who have become internet famous in our world today, it seems easy to do…and so an entire generation is growing up longing to have that fame and fortune as well.

In Jesus’ day, Pharisees were sort of Ancient world “internet famous” – they performed good deeds in the street so that people might see how good they were.  People looked up to them, and they lived an elevated lifestyle amongst the common folk.  Jesus said of their public activities: “Be careful not to perform your righteous acts before men to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2So when you give to the needy, do not sound a trumpet before you, asthe hypocrites do in the synagogues and on thestreets, to be praised by men. Truly I tell you, they already have their reward.” (Matthew 6:1-2)
Listen to Me Sign Person Tries to Get Attention in Crowd
Serving those around us so that others might see our good deeds in not serving God…it is idol worship and we have built self-serving gods in our name.  Be aware of this trap.  Recognize it for what it is, and reject the notion that in order to be a Christian we have to publicly show our goodness and prove our worth.  This isn’t true worship of God, this is showmanship and does not bring honor to God.  Instead, serve God even if no one sees you.  Love others even if it is not reciprocated.  Allow those silent, unobserved spaces to become your sanctuary to the Most High…may it be only for Him!  When we shift our focus from self to God, we realign what worship is, and in Whom we worship.

Prayer:
Lord forgive me when I have not worshiped you, but elevated my  status and ego.
I recognize that I must decrease and you must increase in my life.  Help me to serve you regardless if I ever receive credit for it on this earth.  May the words of my mouth and the actions of my heart be acceptable to You, Oh Lord my strength and my Redeemer.  -Amen.

Day 3 – Are You Picking Rotting Fruit?

“Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit…” Matthew 12:33

Have you heard the phrase “garbage in garbage out?” It describes the results of bad living – whatever we consume – we become.   If we determine to look at everything that comes our way today through the lenses of doom and gloom – that is what we shall become.  Our perspective on things can, in some ways, dictate the outcomes we eventually face.

rotWhat kind of fruit are you picking?
In this new year, you have a choice to make:  will you conscientiously strive to consume the spiritual fruit that brings you growth, depth and life, or will you settle for picking rotten fruit, which leads to more than rottenness in your life?  It all comes down to your choice in the matter.  It sounds easier than it really is, this I know all too well.  Many times I have eaten this rotten fruit in my life and suffered the effects of such decomposition.

Context:
Jesus had some harsh words for the Pharisees of His day.
He even calls them a brood of vipers in the very next verse (34).
I would be afraid of what He might say to us sometimes, when we look around at others and attempt to cast judgement all the while forgetting to focus on our own trees and the fruit we are bearing.  I would hope that in sobering moments, His Holy Presence would bring conviction and even chastisement.  This is a bitter thing to consider, but better to be confronted with our own areas to work on than consume more bitter, rotting fruit that we have produced.

So how about it?
fruitWhat kind of fruit is your tree producing right now?
Is it sweat, ripe and pleasing to God?
Or is there room to grow and improve?
This is a very personal devotional thought today, one I would guess we shy away from…but don’t shy away from this.  Take a long sobering look at your life right now – can you declare unabashedly that you are a fine fruit-producer for Christ?  If you come to the conclusion that you still have work to do – do not become frustrated and defeated!  You are not alone…many of us (including myself) are right there with you.

Homework Assignment:
Read Matthew 12:33-37 again right now:
33 “Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit. 34 You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. 35 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. 36 But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. 37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”

Questions to Ponder:
What work still needs to be done in my heart right now?
Are there weeds growing amongst the fruit?
How can I de-clutter my heart today and remove the rotten fruit?
How can I encourage others around me today?
What soothing words can I speak on behalf of Christ to those I meet today?

Prayer:
Dear Lord, I confess that at times I do not always produce good fruit in my life.
Sometimes my words are harsh and my actions do not reflect You.
Help me to be your image in all that I say and do today.
I desire to produce in my life a harvest of hope and love for You and you alone, and in so doing I might be an Eternal aroma to those I meet.  Help me to be the very best representative of you!  In your name I pray these things.   -Amen.

A Transforming Year – Reading #1

As promised, I will attempt, with the help of others, to include a Pondering daily devotional this year.  I hope that this might be found useful to all who read it. -Blessings!

Reading #1
Do not conform to the patterns of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…” -Romans 12:2

What will this year have in store for us?
Will it be an epic year, or will it be a difficult year?
What challenges will I face?

As we look into this new year of 2017, we cannot but help to wonder what might happen, both the good and the not so good.  Despite the fact that we do not know what the future holds for us, we do know who holds that future!  Our faith must not be so shallow as to worry about what could happen, or what might take place…these things are beyond our reach, and as Matthew 6:25-34 describes – what good is worrying?…”Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear...”  The only thing that worry is good for is wasting our time and efforts.  Let go of what could be, or what might happen…these worries distort and consume us if we allow them access to our innermost thoughts.

Instead, let our focus verse become just that today – Your focus.
Do not allow the elements and issues of the world around you to decide how you will live or interact with others.  These concerns of the world will always be there, but at the end of the day can we really control it all?  – NO!

Do you want a transformation that lasts much longer than any new year’s resolution?  Then look no further than God’s Holy Presence to begin that new and good work within you!  It won’t be easy.  There will be setbacks along the way, but with His power and strength, all things are possible!  But I must warn you – this path takes discipline and diligence to see a marked improvement of the soul.

Take time today read this focus verse…read it more than once.
Perhaps say the words out loud…even take it step further and write these words in your own handwriting somewhere, perhaps in a journal or a piece of paper you can post on your refrigerator or some place prominent.  Pray for God’s transforming power to begin this good work within you anew.

Homework: (Don’t be afraid, there won’t be a test)
* Read the words out loud
* Write them down
* Pray about your concerns and worries – begin to lay them one by one at God’s feet.
* Invite God into every aspect of your day – from beginning to end.

Prayer:
Dear Lord, I have these worries in my life.
Fears about tomorrow.
Stresses at work and sometimes with my family and friends.
Intercede in my life today!
Remind me of your transforming power that will guide and provide me peace in the midst of my storms.  Help me this year Lord to trust you more, to worry less about the world around me that often consumes my thoughts and leaves me drained and empty.  Give me a passion for others that reflects Yours.  Change this heart of mine, transform my thoughts, ambitions, desires and efforts into an outpouring of love for You.  Thank you for Your presence with me, now walk be side me into this new year.  In Jesus name I pray these things.  -Amen.

3 Worship Songs God Hates

tredWe must tread lightly here, for to insinuate that we know the mind of God is dangerous territory.  However, what we know of Him and that of human interaction with the Almighty, there are certainly forms of worship God hates.  Do you think the term “hate” is too strong?  Does God hate?

There are many scriptures that describes the displeasure of God.
One prime example of this is Proverbs 6:16-19

There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, 18 a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, 19 a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.”

So with that being said, are there things that God hates?
I believe the answer is YES!

Can we then describe moments in worship and in song that could displease God?  Absolutely!  I should also clarify that the term “Worship Song” could be anything we do as we sing to God.  It can contemporary, it can be traditional, or somewhere in the middle.  Are there other things in “worship” other than song?  Of course, but just for this discussion, we are zeroing in on the topic of “Song”…

Here are 3 Worship Songs God Hates:
Allow me to preface this with the following statement: If you were looking for specific names of songs that God possibly hates, sorry…that’s not what this particular blog post is about.  Again, sorry to disappoint you, I won’t be roasting the latest Chris Tomlin song here today.

But here is what I think are 3 Worship Songs God Hates and why…

1  Songs Sung Out Of Obligation
Have you ever gotten up on a Sunday morning to lead worship and the songs you have selected aren’t really resonating with you?  Sometimes it could be that we are just out of sync with our walk with the Lord…there are certainly seasons of life, and not everything is flowersgoing to be peachy.  But I believe God hates obligatory worship.  Imagine if I were to give flowers to my wife simply because it’s the right thing to do, not that I want to, but rather because it’s expected.  How do you think she would feel if, as I gave her the flowers, I said; “Here’s you weekly obligatory flower arrangement dear!”?  Do you think she would enjoy them and feel loved in my gift of those flowers?  Of course not!

In a way, when we sing songs of worship and adoration to God because we feel obligated, it’s like giving Him flowers that mean nothing to us and are given out of ritual not love and appreciation.  God doesn’t want our obligatory worship songs and our meaningless attempts at worship – He wants it to mean something to us, something that aren’t just meaningless utterances of lyric lines and memorized scriptures.  God hates obligatory praise!

2. Songs Sung Out Love For The Song
Which do we worship, God or our favorite song?
I’m not saying this happens all of the time, but sometimes those worship songs (or even hymns) we sing can become a false idol of our worship.  We just don’t “feel” it when we aren’t singing just the right songs…but if that all time “fav” comes up – we are rockin’ and rollin’ with our hands raised high.  hands

Let me ask a question – is it God that we worship or the song that we sing?
I would hope our answer would be “God”, but there is a danger of placing our favorite song on a place of worship instead of God himself.  God hates the worship of idols – He is truly jealous for our worship and that of us.  He wants all there is of us, not a portion – but our EVERYTHING!  I fear at times, we place the love for a song over the love for God.  Our worship cannot simply revolve around our emotions and how WE feel…We are to worship Him REGARDLESS of how we feel.  Perhaps that is the toughest thing to do, yet through discipline and perseverance, we can!

3. Songs Sung To Display Talent (The Concert Performance)
worshipWorship leader – beware!  Worship was never about how good YOU sing or how Awesome your Guitaring or Piano-ing is… Seriously, if all we do in worship is try to emulate a Hillsong or Jesus culture/David Crowder concert, then we’re going about it all wrong and we need to stop!

Jesus called the Pharisees praying loudly in the streets so that everyone could hear and see them – Hypocrites or Actors.  He certainly had a lot of harsh words to say to those kinds of people – people who knew better.  He even went so far as to call them a brood of vipers.  God abhors actors, fakers and hypocrites.  hypocriteOur worship of God ought not to be a circus displaying our vast array of talents for the world to see.  Real worship isn’t about a concert or our aspirations to be the next big thing in the Top Ten CCLI Worship Leaders.  All these things are earthly desires – as we strive for human accolades and praise.

Such things do not attempt to elevate the name of Jesus, but rather promote our name to the masses.  In the words of U2 “Then they put Jesus in show business, now it’s hard to get in the door…” (God Would Send His Angels, U2)

God hates performances by actors and hypocrites that should have been about who He is, not who the performers are.  Where is the depth of worship here?  I’ll tell you – it’s about an inch deep and a yard wide.  Do our best?  Absolutely!  But if what we do is called “Worship” but it’s not God we are adoring but rather the music and our abilities on stage, then perhaps it’s time to reassess and realign our motivation and goals once again.

Well, we have strolled lightly here today.
The Bottom line, God doesn’t want any substitutes or consolation prizes – He wants our hearts and our attention.  Are there times when we worship with a divided heart or mind?  Are our motivators God honoring or human praise seeking?

What do YOU think?
Something more to ponder today.
God Bless You!

Do You Love Him?

“…And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28

verseWe Christians are often very good at quoting scripture, especially verses that bring us comfort and strength in times of need.  These verses have a way of making us feel good and bring us relief in knowing that we aren’t alone and that we have One who goes before us on this faith journey.  But I wonder how intricately do we know the passages that we cling to?  Do we know a scripture’s complete context and the full understanding of  the words we utter from memorized verses in whatever translation that we’ve memorized them from?

Do we sometimes pick and choose the passages that most suit us in our times of need?  Perhaps our troubles have begun way before the physical worries manifest themselves in our lives because we have failed to include the Almighty into our day and moment by moment.  God doesn’t want us simply to check in from time to time with Him, like some teenager would with his or her parents while they are out late with friends.  No, instead He desires the fellowship which lasts all day.  bible

For example, the focus verse that I have listed above has been taken out of context many times.  We stop short of reading it in its full entirety because we only want the good that comes from God.  We only want what we want and we fail to understand that this relationship with God first begins with love and devotion to Him.  From this all things flow.  Now, don’t misunderstand me.  We do not love simply to have good things happen to us.  God is not some genie who grants wishes if we are good to Him.  We pleaded with by the Holy Spirit to love because He first loved us.  We are invited to become partakers of His kingdom and to be called sons and daughters of God.  There is no better invitation than that!  But you see love isn’t about getting stuff…that’s not love at all.  We don’t love God to get things or because it benefits us in a prosperity sort of way.  No, instead a right relationship with Him demands of us our full devotion and love.

This is the path least taken in this world.
This is the place where true faith walks in tandem with the Holy Spirit.

peterJesus looked into Peter’s eyes, these same eyes that stared blankly at accusers while his lips denied his allegiance to his Teacher.  Jesus asked Peter if he loved Him.  Not once, not twice, but three times – the same amount of times Peter had lied and denied Him.  Imagine the conviction of that moment.  Envision sitting there with the Son of Man and coming face to face with your shortcomings and failures?  I am certain that the tears of shame would flow, and my heart would be rent.

Jesus still asks us today, “Do you love me?”  He pleads with us “Let me in, allow me access to your daily life…let me be a part of who you are – can I be a part of your very identity?”
What will your answer be?

Something more to ponder today.

5 Indicators of a Rotting Church

“The Church right now has more fashion than passion, is more pathetic than prophetic, is more superficial than supernatural.”
Leonard Ravenhill, Revival God’s Way

I believe that the Church is truly in trouble in the Western world.
It is not one organization or singular church but Christianity as a whole.
I do not want to sound like another alarmist or crackpot spewing lists to indicate an end of days, but I do want to cast some light into what many would deem the foundational crumbling of the Church.  What are some indicators?  What would some of the symptoms be of a dying and decaying church?

Here are a five indicators of a rotting church:

5.  Professional Preachersjoel
“You can have all the doctrines right, yet still not have the presence of God” -Leonard Ravenhill
We see the flashy, eloquent preacher on television and we demand that our churchs hire preachers like that…or we long to change how our “performance” at the pulpit is executed.  I wonder if Jesus encountered flashy pharisees in His day?  If He did Jesus certainly didn’t have many nice things to say about them.  Rather, Jesus called those religious people who prayed outloud in the streets “actors” and “hyprocites”.  We can have the most professional preachers in our pulpits, but if there is no substastantive message of conviction, salvation and holiness, it is all meaningless.

For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.” 2 Timothy 4:3

Preachers, this is no excuse to go to the pulpit unprepared and unstudied, no!  Instead, we must prepare harder, study more intently and lead with self-conviction and prayer!  We dont’ need any more prosperity preachers.  No more fluff and phoney messages with very little substance of the spiritual journey that we are all called to walk.

A Strong indicator of rot comes directly from those we have in our pulpits and those we choose to listen to on a weekly basis.

4.  No Hunger For Scripture
bibleWith professional preachers, also comes a lack of hunger.  Mind you, these are not always connected.  I believe this is a stand-alone problem for many within our western world.  If one were to journey to some of the poorest countries in the world, you would find a see hunger for scriptural truths and churches memorizes whole chapters of scripture…where is this hunger in the more prominent and prosperous countries?  I believe there is a direct correlation between comfort and security and the shallowness of scriptural knowledge!  Why rely on the scripture if every want, and all of life’s comforts are met (roughly speaking)?

This may sound negative, but I fear our western culture has become so soft of faith and scriptural knowledge that we are bound to enter another dark age – this time devoid of any of the truths and life lessons found in Scripture.

Is your church rotting?  Ask yourself how much time is devoting throughout your week to the study and interpretation of scripture?

3.  A Church That Is Prayerless & Building Bound
“A true church lives and moves and has its being in prayer” -Leonard Ravenhill
With the comforts of a western culture comes prayerlessness.
A church that prays together stays together – or so I’ve been told.  How much emphasis is placed on prayer anymore?  I am sure there are still some deeply prayerful places in this world.  I know that I have experienced some of these moments, but I wonder if prayer has become an after thought in our services, in our weekly schedules, in our lives as congregants?  Do you remember the old prayer meetings?  Many of those have disappeared in our churches.  They’ve been distilled down to just a five minute inclusion in our services or bible study…but should they be more prominent, more substantive?  Do we still have worries and fears, sick and dying?  Do we still have things that require corporate prayer?
pray
Secondly, another indicator (a twofer for my Minnesotan friends) of a rotting church:
We become building bound – meaning that we expect our communities to come to us.  We put up amazingly designed billboards, posters, flags and we wave them at the community…it’s like we are scattering bird seed in a trail hoping that people will follow it right up to our front doors.  We have this grandeous idea that everything we do must be done in our buildings – what happened to evangelism?  What happened to getting out into the streets?  Do we still have a concern for the drunk down the street who is caught in a habitual addiction of stumbling out of the bar that they frequent?  Do we still feel compassion for the family down the street that is dirt poor and cannot find a meal to eat in their cupboards?  A Church who remains stuck in their building (no matter how beautiful it may be) is a dying church with little mission or outreach into the community they were birthed from.

2.  A Loveless Congregation
Dare I say that perhaps this is cog in the chain reaction of not being community driven and lacking mission & compassion for others.  Obviously no church ever desires to become loveless…but it can happen over time.  I honestly hope that this evidence of a rotting church is the dying gasp before the doors are closed for good, and all I hope to accomplish by saying that is – we (the Church) needs to love each other more!  This should be a siren call to the church to offer more compassion and selflessness amongst its congregants and its community.  love

If we lose the love of others, we have also lost the love of God – these two are inseparable! “Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.” 1 John 4:20
If this happens – we will have a rotting church on our hands!

1. Comfort & Apathy
Signs of a rotting church can be born out of the comforts that have become common place in the western world.  We have no need of want.  Our church buildings, many of them, are being built larger and larger.  The church, and its congregants, become apathetic to the needs of the community (again because all things “ministry” take place inside not outside of the church walls).   Apathy is a death knell to the church.  If/when we reach this point of not caring for people – we might has well lock the doors and burn the scriptures because it is useless to a dead church.
apathy
These are strong words – because I feel at times we are deaf to the warnings such as this!
We cannot allow apathy to take root in our hearts.  We cannot pretend all is well when suffering is taking place in our communities.  We cannot rest until mercy and compassion becomes our life blood again!  Sometimes our churches get so big that we start to treat it as a big corporate business and in so doing we unintentionally leave Christ out of our missional planning.

Ponder This:
Are we striving to be or have professional preachers in our churches?
Is there still a deep hunger for Scripture in you and in your church?
What of Prayer?  Do we consider supplication to be vital and intrinsic in who we are?
Have you prayed for God to give you His vision for people around you?  If not begin to pray this prayer every day!  When you do, may your love increase for others and any residue of apathy – may it flee from you!

Something more for the Church to ponder today – to God be the glory!

In Perfect Peace…

You will keep in perfect peace
    those whose minds are steadfast,
    because they trust in you.
-Isaiah 26:3

Can I make a confession?
There are many times where my mind is not as steadfast as it should be.
Many times I become distracted by life.  The ebb and flow of problems seem to mount and I find myself anything but steadfast.  My mind drifts to the chaos of it all.  My mind forgets to look to the source of all of life’s strength and power…and I begin to sink.

Peter started to sink because he doubted. peter
He doubted that he could really pull of this feat of doing what Jesus did – walk on water.
He doubted his own abilities…perhaps a part of him doubted Christ too…
His eyes drifted away from Jesus…
He looked at his own feet, his own heart, his own insecurities, and fear caused him to sink into those murky depths.

I am a lot like Peter…
some days, perhaps I am even like the rest of the disciples still standing in the boat…not moving, not chancing anything, just watching.

Perfect Peace?
I need that perfect peace in my life, do you?
I am in need of a steadfast mind, holding firm to Christ in my often turbulent life.
Can you relate to this?
Are you sometimes still in the boat with me and the other disciples, just watching Peter sink?  peace2

Prayer:
Dear Lord, help me with my “steadfastness”…because many times I am anything but steadfast.  Often times I get swept away with the problems of life, and I cannot find my footing any longer.  Lord, guide my path.  I long to rest in your presence.  I desire your perfect peace in my stormy life.  I am weary, and I wish to take upon your yoke in my life.  Help me to trust you.  Allow me to venture out of the boat and to walk where you impossibly walk, because with You all things are possible!  Lead me Lord! -Amen.

Putting Jesus Back

Monday after Easter, and the Easter dress is on the floor in the laundry room, as are the Easter suits and carelessly tossed ties and shoes.  Easter is over.  The Celebration party had its curtain call.  Everyone went home.  So…what now?

What impact does the Resurrection have on us the day after?  The week after?  The month after?   Understandably we can say “Well there’s always next year…”  or “I go to church every Sunday anyway.”  These are all valid points, but what kind of impact does Christ’s resurrection have on you and me in our daily lives?

All too often we want to put Jesus back.
We put Him back into those boxes for next year.
We put Him back on the hanger as we hang up that Easter dress or suit.  dress
We close our Bibles to that story until next year rolls back around.
We put Jesus back into our preconceived, compartmentalized places.

But should we put it all back like that?
Is there a trace of Him in our work places, social events, friendships, relationships, families?  Or does He get put away just like the seasonal stuff in our closets?
I have to wonder what the answer is even for me sometimes.
I can accept a risen Savior, but what does it mean in my habits, and in my faith walk and my desire to become more and more like Him?  How does this Resurrected Christ fit into my overly complicated life?  Am I secretly compartmentalizing Jesus?  Am I packing Him away for another year?  Am I checking that season off on my calendar  and moving on without Him there?

box2

What a tragedy it would be for any of us to progress past the cross and the empty tomb without it affecting the entirety of who we are as His creation!  Essentially when we put Him back on the shelf, in the box, on a hanger – we are selectively accepting who He is and who He can be in our lives.   We are, subconsciously putting limits on the Almighty…we are also putting limits on our own spiritual growth.

A New Creation:
A friend of mine on Facebook posted this comment that sparked my heart and ignited some intrinsic truth deep within me.  Have you ever had one of those “A-ha” moments?  Where the light bulb flickers on, and it’s bright and it shines on truth.  Perhaps this will spark something within you too in terms of re-framing  who Jesus is, which will undoubtedly make us second guess putting Jesus back…here it is:

One could suggest that the ‘tetelestai’ (it is finished) saying refers not to atonement but to creation; it is the creation that is completed on the cross. On the cross, the true human is created, creation is now complete.” (Cameron Horsburgh/Michael Hardin)

                                                      -Mind. Blown. –

How can you ever go back to putting Jesus on the shelf?
How can you not have a life changing event take place in your heart when you consider ALL of creation is now complete in this Messiah atonement?  That we can’t put God in a box and only bring Him out once a year in light of creation becoming complete in Him.  There’s nowhere else to move besides forward in our relationship to the One who has made EVERYTHING complete!

It’s like buying a new suit, wearing it only one time just to put it on a hanger and stare at it while wearing the same old dingy ripped up, dirty outfit you’ve always worn.  It just doesn’t make any sense.  So…why do we do this sometimes with Jesus?

Unwrapping It.
Take Jesus off the shelf.   box3
Throw the old outfit away – you have a new suit to wear!
Throw away the old title for yourself – “Sinner”
Because you’ve been saved by this amazing grace found only in Jesus, and you’ve been given a new title – “Child of God.”
You can’t compartmentalize Jesus.
You can’t “seasonalize” Him either.
He can’t be contained.
He wants to transform you!
He has already completed creation – which can include YOU!

Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.” Revelation 3:20

May you find an ever present Christ with you today!
May our hearts be compelled to live for Him and reside with Him every moment of every day!  May we experience this new creation every time we utter His name on our breath.
May this transformation of the new, complete creation be in us EVERY day.

To God be the glory!

“The Spear” by Jim Gallop

Below is a short skit written and presented by a friend of mine,  Major Jim Gallop.
Read, consider, ponder, and revel in Christ’s amazing love for us!

THE SPEAR

(Scene opens with Roman guard, gazing at the end of his spear in stunned disbelief. He is standing, centre stage, quarter turn right as play begins. Spear is held to display its end before the audience)

Soldier:
My most useful tool….my best friend…..my help in times of trouble….my spear. That is what they told me when I chose to become a soldier……always be aware of the power of your spear.
And, oh, I was aware….how I learned to accurately throw you in battle, how I clinged to you as we defended our legion against Jewish zealots, bent on their preposterous notion that they could defeat the Roman army. We crushed them with our spears, our swords, our shields, and our might.
Our army was one of the mightiest ever seen! Men from all over Italy, armed and always ready for battle! The Roman empire had hold on vast areas of land…..the Meditteranean, North Africa, Europe, Syria, the middle east….all through the power of our weaponry.
I…..well, I was sent to this squalid refuse of a place known as Jerusalem. My orders were to protect Roman interests. “Squash any rebellion against our authority”, they told me, “Maintain control of the people, make them know that Rome still has power here”…….power.

So yes, I knew the kind of bone-crushing power that these weapons held…..but now, I wonder…and, I am confused. You see, they had me stand by to witness someone called Jesus of Nazareth executed. They nailed him to a cross on that hill behind me to make an example of him. They called this Jesus ‘king of the Jews’ to mock him. He was hung on that cross for 3 hours and I watched, oh I watched…..3 hours of excruciating pain for this man, the nails digging into his flesh, the whip marks exposing gashes on his skin, the crown of thorns they had battered down onto his head, making fresh blood drip onto his face. He was in incredible agony, and believe me I have seen agony before….but this sort of agony was not normal. This agony he had, well, it was actually a sorrow….a sorrow for those who were executing him. He cried out to His God saying “Father forgive them for they do not know what they are doing”, He hung there, and did not yell at people for spitting at him, or for tormenting him…he said “father, forgive them.”

After he died, I was told by my commander to thrust this spear into his side to make sure He was dead. I-I hesitated at first, but then as I had always been taught to do, I followed the command. As I thrust this spear into him, blood came out, then water. Blood and water came gushing out of Jesus’ side! It was, dare I say it! It was as if this spear, covered in blood was being cleansed by Jesus on the cross. This spear which was used to keep order and discipline…this spear which was used to make others bow to it….this spear was being cleansed by Jesus, who had called on His God to forgive us. This….this spear (lay down the spear….fade to black)
