Falling in sinkholes or Rockin’ it out!

“Be very careful, then, how you live – not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.  Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.”  (Ephesians 5:15-17)

ImageJust look at this picture for a moment…let it sink in…(no pun intended).   Recently a man, while sleeping in his bed, lost his life because beneath his home a sinkhole had developed.  This Florida man’s body was never recovered because the earth beneath the home was too turbulent and unstable.  Imagine for a moment being in your bed asleep and suddenly the floor gives away and you not only dream you’re falling, but you literally are plunging to your death.  How horrifying a moment!  I don’t want to trivialize or make light of the grief this family must be going through.  To be there one minute and lost the next…it’s simply unbelievable and yet true.

In a very real sense, this is what can happen to us spiritually as followers of Christ if we’re not careful.  Jesus used an illustration like this to point out how important it is to not only hear His words but to put them into practice in our lives.  He said to put them into practice is like being a wise man who built his house upon a rock, where as if you don’t listen and apply His word you are like a foolish man who built his house upon the sand…watch out because a sinkhole could suck you down and you will disappear forever (My paraphrase).

What sorts of things in your life have the capacity to create sinkholes in your spiritual walk today?  Don’t be foolish, and don’t simply ignore the warning signs either!  If we are to be wise and live for Christ, then we must be careful and to utilize every opportunity God gives us each moment of every day!  We do not know what tomorrow holds, but we do know who holds our tomorrows!  So be wise, be firmly grounded and be mindful of the sinkholes in this world, Satan would love some company!

Good News, Bad News…

Image

Good news is sometimes hard to find.  We turn on the news and discover more violence, more issues, more bad news.  In journalism there’s a saying, “bad news sells”…are we that consumed by bad news?  Do we thrive on bad news like the Romans and their Colosseum games of torture and violence?   Has society become blood thirsty voyeurs?  It is certainly a perception of our society that isn’t too far from the truth.

In a song by mainstream Christian band “Switchfoot” called “Blinding Light” they explore the lies in our culture today, and one of the lines says, “We are culture that eats our youth”.  When you consider the ramifications and consequences of our media saturated world there is a dark side to our thirst for news stories and drama.

Image

Do we neglect the Good News?  Does our world need this good news?  The answer to both of these questions is a resounding ‘Yes’!    Acts 8:34-35 tells us of a moment in the ministry of Philip who encountered a person who needed to hear about this good news: “The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?” Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus.

Image

This good news needs to be heard in our world!  There will be many who will ignore it, many who will dismiss it, but our call by Christ in the great commission to “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19)

So go and tell this awesome good news to those you meet today!  The world doesn’t need more bad news, they need good news…they need The Good News!

-Just a thought for your day!

“Who do you think you are?”

Image

Who do you think you are?”  I heard this from one of my sons just the other day as he was sent to his room and was expressing his outrage at the sentence that I had just handed down to him.  He yelled it at the top of the stairs just after stomping up each step like a charging Elephant.  His comment kind of brought me up short, who was I?  In a moment of tears and anger, my son had struck a chord in me.   It wasn’t so much the situation at hand, he certainly needed to be sent to his room (consequences of poor behavior), but it was an existential question that got me thinking literally “who do I think I am?”

Image

In order to answer that very basic question, the Lord gave me His response that question.  A moment of epiphany took place within me in my preparation for Good Friday.  I was to bring the message that evening and so my study of God’s word became focused on the crucifixion story.  Prior to the crucifixion story is an amazing yet brief expository examination on the identity of who Jesus was.  Matthew 16:13-16 records this event.  Jesus asks His disciples “who do people say the Son of Man is?”  His question is first what does the common person know about the identity of this Son of Man?  And their response to His question is essentially the Son of Man is a good person, maybe John the Baptist, maybe Elijah, maybe Jeremiah or some other prophet.  It’s a response that essentially declares the people didn’t know who the Son of Man was.  They truly didn’t comprehend what God’s plan was within the identity of the Son of Man.

Then, after Jesus hears their responses He asks them a more directed question…this time it’s personal, intimate, unguarded; “But what about you?”  He asks them looking into their eyes as if He is looking directly into their souls, the very fibers of their created being.  The moment of truth is hovering and hanging upon the completion of Jesus’ question, and slowly He asks it almost as if He’s concerned what their answer may be; “But what about you?  Who do you say I am?”  Imagine Andrew glancing at John, as John frowns and exchanges eyes contact with the others and then finally looks at Peter, who always seems to be the boldest of the group.  Peter, as if prompted by the non-verbal exchange looks back at Jesus and makes his declaration of faith, identity and purpose; “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God!”

Image

In a single solitary sentence, Peter makes a statement so bold that to speak it in the wrong place at the wrong time with Pharisees or priests within ear shot would have meant a death sentence.  Peter declares Jesus to be Messiah and God’s Son!  Jesus’ identity is revealed in scripture, confirmed to His followers, and this epic redemption story is about to unfold for all of humanity.   All because that question “Who do you think you are” is answer by Jesus.

Identity Revealed:

Because of who Christ is, revealed to us, we are then able to be identified with Him, who was crucified for our sins and also with His resurrection which is our door by which eternal life is opened to us!
But as many as received him, to them gave he the right to become children of God, even to them that believe on his name (John 1:12 ASV)

We now have the right to be called sons and daughters, children of God!  That’s who we are!  If we are members of the body of Christ, then we ought to no longer struggle with this identity crisis!  We are His children!  Christ has been revealed to us, His identity is real and His power as the Son of God has conquered sin and death for us!  When people ask “who do you think you are?”; we can humbly and confidently reply that we are children of the Most High!  Our identity doesn’t give us license to lord it over the world, or judge the world either, but I hope it does provide a measure of peace for our souls.  WE ARE HIS!  If we identify ourselves as Christians, and we also claim that we too are crucified with Christ then our identity is also answered and we ought not to live in crisis over who we are in this world!  (Galatians 2:20)

Who do you think you are today?  This question isn’t asked in a condescending tone, but simply inquiring whether or not you know who you are and more importantly WHOSE you are!

Spinning like a Merry-Go-Round

Image

James 1:5-8 (NIV)
5 If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. 6 But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.

A few years ago I experienced a very bad bout of vertigo.  I was laying on my bed, looking up and the room was spinning round and around and around.  It was like involuntarily being on a merry-go-round as it spun faster and faster and faster.  It was a very disconcerting thing for me.  I felt sick to my stomach; I had lost control and couldn’t stop this awful ride.  To put it plainly it was hell.  Eventually I had to go to the emergency room and get checked out.  After a series of tests it was revealed that I had a buildup of fluid behind my ear and this was the culprit to my world spinning around.

Isn’t it funny how such a small thing can become such a problem in life?  I struggled with my world seemingly spinning out of control and it happened that one of my ears had an issue.  It makes you really appreciate and also realize just how delicately balanced our lives and bodies are.

So it is with our faith as well.  Not so much on God’s end, but our end.  We are often like a merry-go-round in our faith.  We go round and round and sometimes we never come to any decision and we make no long term commitments to God.  Yet God is standing there ready to supply us with the wisdom that we need if only we ask Him.  Why is it that we forget that He’s there?  Why is it that we don’t cry out to God every day when our world seems to be spinning around us?

I think pride is a part of it.  All too often we feel as if we need no one’s help and if we were to ask it would be a sign of our weakness or inability.  Yet God wants us to call on Him in every season of life, spinning or not.  He knows how difficult life is because Christ lived it.  Jesus came to our level and He can truly identify with our struggles, our temptations, and our pains.  Having this knowledge of His intimate understanding of the human existence, it would be foolish NOT to call upon Him in our times of need and contentment.  Pride shouldn’t play a part in us missing out on His wisdom and strength.

Lastly, as James writes, we shouldn’t doubt that when we ask God that He will or will not respond.  God is always faithful to those He loves…and guess what?  He loves YOU!  So don’t have second thoughts about God hearing you, answering you or being there for you…He will be there, He will hear and He will answer!  If there’s one place in the Universe that you can place your faith and your hopes upon it’s our Father in Heaven.  He will never let us down!

A closing word of caution:

Even though He will never let us down and He hears us when we call, don’t treat God like a good luck charm or a ‘Get out of Jail’ card.  He doesn’t work like that.  His desire is for us to seek Him every minute of every day.  He desires a relationship with us that is so much more than a word of prayer in the midst of our troubled times.  God desires our hearts, our lives our love.  When we have this type of relationship, He not only intercedes amidst our merry-go-rounds of trouble, but He joins us in the battles and in the struggles.

Not today…its my shipwreck!

Candidly

the candles burned down low

time seemed to flow

far too fast.

Awesomely

I crashed and burned

the tables turned

and the dreams changed

into nightmares…

without a care

the walls caved in

exposing my sin

and I was left

with nothing.

How can these

heartaches

mend again?

How can shattered

pieces

be glued back

together?

The cracks will still

show

when the light

is right

but candidly

these candles burn

too low.

Painfully

the seas all

capsize my memories

my logic flees

and all that’s

left is

second hand sympathies.

Why can you see

when blindness

takes the heart of me

when the pain

is more to me

than just a heartache?

Is there freedom

inside?

Some place to

hide?

I’m waiting for

these storms to

subside

maybe

maybe

one day…

but not today…it’s my shipwreck!

Giving up on Easter?

Image

It’s April 1st today.  Obviously the stores are all preparing for the next big holiday and opportunity to make money.

Image

The Easter bunnies, Lilies and other ‘seasonal’ items are on sale at severely discounted prices…it’s a steal!  But the thought came to mind this morning, are we giving up on Easter?

Not so much the Easter eggs or the fancy dresses, but rather the the implication of resurrection in our lives.  Our culture moves at such a fast pace that Easter is literally and figuratively yesterday’s news and we move on to the next best thing.  But are we missing out?  Are we losing the true meaning of Easter when we cast our vision on tomorrow and miss out on the sacredness of Jesus’ resurrected ministry before the ascension?

Image

I think the answer is yes.  I reminds me of driving on the highway.  I like to speed a little, and down I go on the highway making good time, and once in a while I will drive right by an exit that I’m supposed to take.  I have to keep driving up the road, which is out of my way and make a u-turn at the next exit to reach my destination.  So it is sometimes with us, who are immersed in our cultures.  We get up to cruising speed, we’re really speeding through life and we miss our exit.  We miss the destination all together if we’re not careful.  The danger is the meaning of the resurrected Christ vanishes in our fast paced lifestyles.

When Jesus said I have come that you might have life and have it abundantly (John 10:10) He wasn’t just saying words to make us feel better, He truly meant them!  We can have new life, new hope, new peace…but if we speed by this wondrous event at the speed of light we may never grasp it.

It may be Monday, the day after Resurrection Sunday, but don’t be too quick to move onto the next best thing.  Take some time today to reflect on Resurrection, Eternity, Heaven, God’s Kingdom here on Earth!  Take your time, ponder it, and allow the peace that passes all understanding fill you today.  Don’t give up on Easter just yet…matter of fact, don’t give up on it at all.  This event was epic, never duplicated again and Christ invites us to the empty tomb today to participate in this resurrected life and to live it abundantly.

One Day

Palm Sunday…Hosanna in the Highest!

palm-frond-10f

The day had arrived for Jesus to announce to the people of Jerusalem just who He was.

His disciples were asked to go ahead of him to collect a donkey and so they did.

When He rode in a on donkey it would symbolize peace, not might, because to do so

He would have needed a Horse to symbolize His power.

Isn’t it interesting how the mightiest son of the One and only God came into the largest city

of God’s people, Israel, and He was rejected?  Oh sure that day people gathered and placed

their cloaks on the ground for him and waved palm branches…but in the book of Luke

it records that when the city came into view Jesus wept over it.  He then says, “If you…had only know this day what would bring you peace – but now it is hidden from your eyes.  The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you in on every side, they will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls…”(Luke 19:42-44)

Jesus weeps for them because they didn’t get it.   They only saw Jesus as a political possibility, another warrior up-riser who could possibly rally the nation to rebel against Roman…but that’s not what Jesus came to do.  He came to save everyone from their own sin, it was a much more important assignment than just freeing one nation, His message and purpose was to free the entire world.  Jerusalem, and the nation of Israel and its people at that time didn’t get it…they missed the purpose, except for a handful of faithful disciples.

Don’t miss the purpose of Christ in your life today!  Palm Sunday isn’t just about people lauding Jesus in the streets, Palm Sunday is the beginning of the recognition of just what Jesus came to do…to set the captives, you and me and everyone else…free!

Let’s boldly shout – “Hosanna in the highest” today and know why we declare His majesty!

Peeling Stickers and Gaining Freedom

I am a rubric’s cube champion! I can solve a rubric’s cube in my own time and my own method. Let me explain my method.

Many years ago I was given my first Rubric’s cube and began that very day to attempt to place each frustrating colored cube into the right sequence to match them all up. I tried turning the columns this way at that to find success..I would make a turn only to realize I have been going around and around making the same mistakes, actually repeating the same sequential turns which turn into repeated bad habits. When it was all said and done I was a stubborn fool going round and round doing the same things which were not leading me anywhere near success in solving the colored cubed problem. I recall many times tossing it aside in frustration and vowing never to pick it up again only to break that vow countless times.

I had all but given up, then I had a bright idea…it was one of the older rubic’s cube models and because it was older, the colored squares that made up the cube were actually stickers glued into place.

HERE’S WHY IM A CHAMPION:
I had this bright idea, I would solve this cube puzzle by my own methods…and so I proceeded to peel off the first sticker, then another, then another…I peeled off all of the stickers and then re-assembled the pieces until there in front me was a completed rubric’s cube puzzle all uniformly placed in color coordination. I was now a rubric’s cube champion…in my own mind that is.

Okay confession time, truth be told I admit that I cheated…but I did solve the problem, just with my own method and my own out of the box idea.

WHAT AM I TRYING TO SAY?
Life is like one big Rubric’s cube sometimes. No matter where we go, turn we take, we keep making the same mistakes and the same stubborn wrong decisions. It is said that doing the same thing over and over again is complete and utter insanity…so we must all be insane sometimes. Truth be told we live in a fallen world and we are a fallen people. The Bible teaches us this. Yet over and over again we play the game of life and think we’re on a healthy path then make decisions or encounter the consequences of prior decisions and we end up right back at the place in which we started from. Life can become utter insanity when we live like this. We go round and round, vowing to live better, make better decisions, to be good people…then our actions or our attitudes and our habitual lifestyles get the best of us once more…we become frustrated, tired, worn out, and we just want to throw our hands up and just quit.

Jesus came into this world and proved that the Law wasn’t God. Jesus came into this world and illustrated for us that the Law that people had added to and Pharisees regulated couldn’t be kept…God’s children were going round and round, making sacrifice after sacrifice in order to compensate for their habitual life style that had them going round and round in circles. Jesus came to break that cycle of sin. Jesus busted the game of sin, peeled the stickers (so to speak) off of the lives of humanity and reset them through the shedding of His blood on the cross. He set us free from the cycle and from certain death…because we could not solve this puzzle of life which is Holiness in and of ourselves.

Jesus wants to peel the stickers off of your life and reset them for you today…will you allow him to do this for you? God’s object is to free us…will you let Him?

(My apologies to those avid Rubric solvers out there…It’s just an epiphany that struck truth in my life today!)

A basin of water and some dirty feet

photo (36)

The Passover feast was almost upon them when it happened.  It would be something that would completely catch the disciples off guard and teach them a valuable lesson that they would never forget.    Jesus gets up from the table that He had just been sitting at with His disciples.  All eyes are on Jesus, the disciples were probably thinking to themselves, “now what?”  Then a peculiar thing happens, Jesus takes off His outer garments, wraps a towel around his waist and pours water into a basin.  At this point the disciples had to have been inquisitively looking at Jesus and probably glancing at one another as if to say; “What is He up to here?”  After the water is brimming over the basin, Jesus scoops it up and moves back toward the table again.

As He approaches his students, those who had witnessed countless wonders and miracles, He kneels down in front of them.  How strange it must have been to have witnessed such a sight.  The same Jesus, who had calmed a storm, walked on water, raised the dead to life and healed the sick, was kneeling at the feet of his pupils.  The mighty teacher, God’s one and only Son who was present at the beginning of creation, was now kneeling in front of His creation.   It boggles the mind, blows the roof off of any teaching before or since.  Jesus, Messiah, Savior of the World, kneels and begins to wash the feet of His disciples.  I wonder how Judas must have felt when Jesus looked up into his eyes and proceeded to wash his feet despite what Jesus already knew would transpire?  The room is as silent as a tomb as the disciples struggle to find words in such a solemn moment.   All is silent that is until Jesus moves onto the next disciples’ feet which just so happens to be Peter’s.  The silence is broken with a protest like a stone to a window, as Peter questions Jesus.  “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”  Such an odd question to consider as Jesus kneels there in front of him with water at hand.  It’s a protest of sorts, there’s a hint of outrage in Peter’s voice which is inflected in his tone.  Then Jesus says to him, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” But Peter is sure he understands and he just can’t allow his Rabbi to touch his dirty feet and responds likewise, “you shall never wash my feet.”  It’s more than just honor or pride in his response; it is love and a deep profound respect for his Savior.  The very one that caught his hand as he was sinking in his failed attempt to walk on water was now desiring to apply water to feet.  This was the job of a servant and Peter considered this far beneath his Master.   Then Jesus looks Peter in the eye again and says to him, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”  Understanding still lagging, Peter says, “then Lord wash all of me…”  But Jesus tells him that he is already clean and proceeds to drive home his point as He tells them to be a leader they must first be servants and also wash each other’s feet.

In order to follow Christ we must first be servants.  Jesus laid down His life for us and He asks us to daily serve others with the same humility that He displayed for us in moments just like this one.  To wrap the towel around our waist and wash some dirty feet, without fanfare or notoriety but simply to serve and to display His godly love to those we encounter.  This is simply amazing!  “no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.” –Luke 13:16,17
