Amazing Grace…showing love when love is barren.

Image

Some thoughts on grace today…after all, isn’t that what Christ’s redemption story is all about? We are those who spurned God, rejected Him, sinned and fell hard…we damned ourselves.  We held the match while the bridge burned all the while smelling of gasoline…so to speak.  Christ came so that we might once again have hope of Eternal life.  When Christ died, the bridge called grace was built and lowered for us once again.  Did we deserve this gift?  No!  But grace is still given to us, despite our stubborn, stiff-necked attitudes.

Turning the tables:

Who in your life needs some grace today?  If we are to receive grace from God, then aren’t we to in turn extend that grace to others?  Extending grace to others isn’t for the weak of heart…it takes real guts, courage and fortitude. Extending that grace to those who have spurned you, mocked you, disliked you, ‘un-friended’ you, doesn’t mean you should expect that grace to be reciprocated back…it simply means you love them despite their indifference, and act as Christ would act…you may be the only reflection of Christ that they ever see. Extending grace, means you live consistently within that love and grace regardless of who it is that grace falls upon.

Giving up on Easter?

Image

It’s April 1st today.  Obviously the stores are all preparing for the next big holiday and opportunity to make money.

Image

The Easter bunnies, Lilies and other ‘seasonal’ items are on sale at severely discounted prices…it’s a steal!  But the thought came to mind this morning, are we giving up on Easter?

Not so much the Easter eggs or the fancy dresses, but rather the the implication of resurrection in our lives.  Our culture moves at such a fast pace that Easter is literally and figuratively yesterday’s news and we move on to the next best thing.  But are we missing out?  Are we losing the true meaning of Easter when we cast our vision on tomorrow and miss out on the sacredness of Jesus’ resurrected ministry before the ascension?

Image

I think the answer is yes.  I reminds me of driving on the highway.  I like to speed a little, and down I go on the highway making good time, and once in a while I will drive right by an exit that I’m supposed to take.  I have to keep driving up the road, which is out of my way and make a u-turn at the next exit to reach my destination.  So it is sometimes with us, who are immersed in our cultures.  We get up to cruising speed, we’re really speeding through life and we miss our exit.  We miss the destination all together if we’re not careful.  The danger is the meaning of the resurrected Christ vanishes in our fast paced lifestyles.

When Jesus said I have come that you might have life and have it abundantly (John 10:10) He wasn’t just saying words to make us feel better, He truly meant them!  We can have new life, new hope, new peace…but if we speed by this wondrous event at the speed of light we may never grasp it.

It may be Monday, the day after Resurrection Sunday, but don’t be too quick to move onto the next best thing.  Take some time today to reflect on Resurrection, Eternity, Heaven, God’s Kingdom here on Earth!  Take your time, ponder it, and allow the peace that passes all understanding fill you today.  Don’t give up on Easter just yet…matter of fact, don’t give up on it at all.  This event was epic, never duplicated again and Christ invites us to the empty tomb today to participate in this resurrected life and to live it abundantly.

Treasure: Curses or Blessings?

Image

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven…for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:19-21)

pirates

I can’t help but think of the original movie “Pirates of the Caribbean – The Curse of the Blackpearl”  in which Johnny Depp plays Captain Jack Sparrow.  His treasure is the Black Pearl and taking his rightful place as its Captain again…His antagonist is Captain Barbossa  and the crew have been cursed by a pirate’s treasure so that they can never die but they cannot enjoy the pleasures of life anymore either.  Their treasure in life has become their undoing and they are now cursed because of it.

pirate2

Is it so far fetched to think that earthly treasure can be like this with us as well?  No we may not appear as ghosts in the moonlight, but we may be ruled by our treasures.  Just flip on the television and consider the numerous commercials that tell us we haven’t truly lived until we have the newest and best telephone, electronic device, car or job.  Earthly treasure certainly has its trappings, its lures and its appeal doesn’t it?

Have you heard it said, ‘whatever consumes most of your time will consume you?’   Another word for our treasures could be the word ‘Idol’.  If we become consumed with an idol in our lives, it dominates our time, and our attention then does it not take away from the time we should be spending with God?  Don’t we see throughout the Old Testament that God is a jealous God who wants us to be completely sold out to Him alone?  It literally breaks His heart when his people sell His love for cheap idols of this world that are temporal and will fade away.  It’s like having the Hope Diamond yet trading it in for a cubic zirconia ring that was seen the on Home shopping network…it just doesn’t make sense!

Where is your treasure today?  Are you investing your time and your passions on the Eternal or the temporal and Earthly?  Have you been cursed by your possessions?  Consumed by them?  Don’t allow earthly treasures that are cheap and temporary to replace the love of God which is perfect, lovely and will last forever!

Truth be told, I have made this mistake countless times, it never pays off.  Sure for a time we’re happy with our treasure, but over time it loses its shine and what we thought would bring us happiness leaves us with a vacuum in our hearts…and we’re empty.  Eternal treasure will never leave us feeling this way!  God will never leave us or forsake us, and His promises are always true, noble and priceless in value!

So what’ll it be?  Your shiny new toy that will one day fail you, or God’s Eternal light which shines forever?

Where your treasure is…there your heart is also.  Think on these things, and with the words of Jesus, “He who has ears to hear, let Him hear!”

Let it be…for now.

The doldrums of the day

can never compare

to living a peace

often it evades us

leaves us dejected

rejected and hopelessly

infected with a burdened heart

could we overcome this?

Could we find the light again?

We fumble in the dark

tripping over each other

hurting each other

can we truly overcome this?

One day,

Burdens, Purfume & a Woman

Image

Luke 7:44-48 (NIV)
44 Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. 47 Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven–for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little.” 48 Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”

Jesus had been invited to a dinner party of sorts by a Pharisee name Simon.   The dinner was just underway when a woman enters the room.  She moves quickly because she understands the customs and knows if she doesn’t find Jesus first she will be met with stiff protest and quick eviction from the premises.  Kneeling behind Jesus she begins to weep, it’s an odd sight, embarrassing for the host but Jesus, the dinner guest is unfazed.  Her momentary gasps for breath amidst her tears breaks the awkward silence in the room.   Soon, her tears are flowing rapidly like a swelling river during flood season.  Her gasps increase and she is weeping openly at His feet.  As each tear falls like salty raindrops she purposely positions herself over Jesus’ feet and allows each drop to fall onto them.  His feet are still dusty from the gravely, chalky road and as the moisture from her tears gathers in the crease lines of His feet mud begins to form.   The woman bends closer allowing her long hair to touch his feet.  Reaching up she uses her hair like a cloth and proceeds to wipe the muddied feet.  Then, from her pocket in her cloak she retrieves a small jar of perfume.  The smells of food are suddenly replaced with an expensive aroma of perfume.  She pours it onto Jesus’ feet and continues to wipe away the remnants of the dust and dirt.  Her sobs are now the only sounds within the dining room.

The host; Simon is shocked as the rest of those gathered guests look on in bewildered amazement.   This woman, known by the community for her tarnish reputation is at a Teacher’s feet…such things should not be, and yet Jesus does nothing to stop her.   Instead Jesus looks at Simon and tells Him a short story.   “There were two people who both owed a debt to a moneylender.  One owed five hundred silver pieces, while the other owed fifty.”  Jesus pauses as he glances from the woman back to Simon again, the light of the room reflecting in his eyes dances to the light of the flame.  “Neither one of the debtors had the resources to pay back the debt to the moneylender.” Jesus continues to say, “but a remarkable thing happens, when the moneylender realizes neither one of them could repay the debt back, he cancels the debt.”  Again Jesus glances up from the woman and looks Simon directly in the eyes again as he ask most important question Simon will hear all night, “Which of the two people owning the moneylender money will be the most thankful for the debt cancelation?”  Simon doesn’t waste any time as he responds with confidence, “I imagine the person who owed the most would be the most thankful!”  Jesus nods in agreement and looks down at the distraught woman still wiping his feet with her hair and say to Simon, “You see this woman who has disrupted your dinner party?  She comes with much to forgive, you, Simon didn’t wash my feet when I enter and here she is washing my feet now.”  Simon sits pensively as he listens.  Jesus continues, “When I entered your home you did not greet me with a kiss which is customary, yet this woman has not stopped kissing my feet since she entered the room.”  Silence falls on the room again as all who hear Jesus’ words chews on them like a piece of fatty grizzle.  “Isn’t it remarkable?” Jesus asks, “She has been forgiven for a many sins today!  She has found love and is reciprocating this great love to me even now!”  Then Jesus speaks directly to the woman for the first time with kindness and more respect than anyone in the town had ever given her and her less than perfect reputation; “Woman, your sins are forgiven…” how could such a thing be the others wonder to themselves?   “She was a sinful woman was she not?  Who was this man that can forgive sin?”  The other dinner guests and Simon, the host, murmur and grumble together.  Yet Jesus ignores them and continues to speak to the woman at His feet with love and care; He tells her, “Your faith has saved you this day, now go in peace!”

What a moment for that woman!  She came seeking forgiveness, she came with such a debt that she couldn’t possibly repay, and Jesus canceled the debt and gave her life again!  Imagine the heavy burden that must have been lifted as soon as she got up from His feet?  Can’t you envision her moving a little lighter as she makes her way home?  Perhaps she sleeps heavier than she has slept in a very long time that night!  Those in her household and those that know her well would have seen a drastic change her attitude and lifestyle!  It all came about because Jesus allowed her to weep at His feet and to find forgiveness in this humbling act.  Oh that we too may kneel at His feet and find such sweet deliverance!  Whether you have much to be forgiven for or very little, seek Jesus, kneel before Him with a penitent heart and find your debts of sin canceled!

Burdens are lifted at Calvary, Calvary, Calvary

Burdens are lifted at Calvary, Jesus is very Near!

Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)
28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Early Morning Fears

It’s five o clock in the morning

a small pajamaed body

creeps into our bed

silent as a shadow

shaking like a leaf

in the fall

dreams had turned

and now he churns

next to me,

breathing heavy on my neck

heating these old bones

forgetting how it used to be

when everything is possible

and nothing too hard to fathom

it’s five o clock in the morning

and we wake to encompass

our young soul with love

to help him brave through

the nightmares of tomorrow

…this too shall pass.

Question: “Why Did God come to Earth?”

“It is only because he became like us that we can become like him.”

-Dietrich Bonehoffer

Jesus came to earth.  That impact alone has been felt through time, like a ripple in an ocean that eventually became a tidal wave.   God came to us!  This one statement should touch us in a way that no other statement on earth can compare itself to.  The Creator of this planet, and everything else for that matter, descended to our level…descended to become one of His creations.  Why?  Why would He do this?   What would the motivation be for Almighty God taking on human form?  Was He bored?  Was there nothing else to do?  Obviously there must be a reason.

The Reason:

John 3:16 tells us plainly the reason for God coming to us as a man.  “God so loved the world that He sent His one and only Son so that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life!”  God loved us!  Not just the world that He created, but the men and women that He created in His own image…you and me!  God came to our level so that we might be saved.

Wait.

Saved from what?  Was there some sort of cosmic invasion?  Were there still dinosaurs out there that needed vanquishing and we needed protecting?  No!  So what were we saved from?

The answer is that we were saved from ourselves.  Huh?   What does that mean?   Romans chapter three puts it plainly for us: “This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference,  for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” –Romans 3:22-24 (NIV)

Everyone on this rock that we call Earth has sinned.  Everyone.  Romans 3:23 says “all have sinned.”  Back up a few verses and it also says, “There is no one righteous, not even one…” Romans 3:10 (NIV)  Since Adam and Eve broke God’s heart in the garden of Eden and committed the first sin, everyone who has ever lived carries this ‘sin gene’ within themselves.  There is no one on Earth that is good enough, holy enough or perfect enough to merit meeting the expectations of “righteous”.   So this is why God had to take on human form and save us.  He came to save us from ourselves.  To save us from our own punishment that is certain death without his redemption and sacrifice on our behalf.  God knew we needed a redeemer and so He provided a way for us to be saved.  Why do this for us?  Because He loves us that much!  He loves us more than we could ever comprehend or understand.  He loves us even before we reach out and reciprocate (or try to reciprocate) that love.  Then and only then can we truly understand what Jesus was saying when He said, “The thief cometh not, but that he may steal, and kill, and destroy: I came that they may have life, and may have it abundantly.” –John 10:10 (ASV)

Do you need some assurance today that you’re loved?  Do you realize just how important you are to God himself?  He extends His arms of love to us today and still says to us “I have come that you might have life, and have it abundantly!”   Our Father in heaven invites you to experience real life today.  If you need help learning more about this great love He has for you, begin by reading the gospel of John…read the gospels and especially read the very words of Jesus.  Don’t miss out on the abundant life that God has for you!  Don’t miss out on His love.  Begin today…I dare you! Image

In His Returning (The Prodigal)

If I am lost…

If these hands

no longer

Grasp you

If these feet,

Feeble and calloused

Refuse to inch forward

Static… and alone

If this body,

Aching and groaning

Heart ache

Life ebbing away

Flowing out more

Than flowing in

If this is who

I am now…

If I am found

If I am empty

Then I am powerless

I am a broken

Vessel

Used up

Dropped and shattered

If I am lost…

Who can save?

Who can save…me?

Because if I am lost

If I am indeed static

Like an empty radio signal

If this is me…

Who will rescue this…

This mess

Who would even dare

To care?

Everything flows out of me

Except for this empty

Am I my own worst

Enemy?

Is there any hope left…

For me?

Just when I pray

For the end…

The end of this

The end of all things

Within this broken

Shattered heart

Within the shell

Of an empty man

Something happens

It’s not desperation

nor spiritual exsanguination

 this mind has not

left for vacation

but something happens

from the outside

flowing life back into me

something I can’t explain

Fear replaces hopelessness

It ignites my fingertips

Ignites and increases my shallow breathing

Fear gives way to something

Long lost to me…

A warmth, blanket thick

Envelops me

I am assured

With arms around me

That I am safe

I am home

Was I lost?  Was I truly found?

Then I hear his words

In my ear

A feast for me

For me?  I don’t deserve anything but blame and guilt…for me?  My savior

My hope…turns and says to others near

This is my son…he was lost but now he’s found

My life, my love, my joy is returned to me

Come let us help him see

Let us celebrate in his

Returning.

The Perils of Propagating Apathy

Image

Apathy:

1.

lack of enthusiasm or energy: lack of interest in anything, or the absence of any wish to do anything

2.

emotional emptiness: inability to feel normal or passionate human feelings or to respond emotionally

There’s a real danger in our world today.  It’s not death…well not initially…it could be linked like some shoe string cousin.  It’s not any kind of phobia.  It’s apathy.  I’ve talked about this danger before but sometimes it needs to be belted out through a bull horn before we wake up to its dangerous venom.  Unlike hate or violence or any other kind of life threatening plague on humanity, Apathy can inflict the worst kind of sickness on the spirit on mankind.

There have been countless stories of real life examples of this disease.  A woman in the state of California was mugged in broad day light and no one would come to her rescue…she fought with her attacker as he tried to swipe her purse In Broad Day Light!  The only person that did come to her rescue was a homeless man who happened to be nearby.  Everyone was far too busy to even care about her life threatening situation.

It’s hard to imagine people witnessing something of a violent nature and not doing something about it.  Perhaps there was an element of fear or self-preservation, but to do nothing when one has the opportunity to do something…mind boggling.  You might content that I wasn’t there so I couldn’t judge the merits of the would be witnesses…true and yet this is just a small example of this plight of apathy in our world today.

As Christians images of the parable of the Good Samaritan come to mind.  Read it now from the Message version:

Luke 10:30-38 (MSG)
30 Jesus answered by telling a story. “There was once a man traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho. On the way he was attacked by robbers. They took his clothes, beat him up, and went off leaving him half-dead. 31 Luckily, a priest was on his way down the same road, but when he saw him he angled across to the other side. 32 Then a Levite religious man showed up; he also avoided the injured man. 33 “A Samaritan traveling the road came on him. When he saw the man’s condition, his heart went out to him. 34 He gave him first aid, disinfecting and bandaging his wounds. Then he lifted him onto his donkey, led him to an inn, and made him comfortable. 35 In the morning he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take good care of him. If it costs any more, put it on my bill—I’ll pay you on my way back.’
36 “What do you think? Which of the three became a neighbor to the man attacked by robbers?”
37 “The one who treated him kindly,” the religion scholar responded. Jesus said, “Go and do the same.”

Did you catch the last thing Jesus said to the teachers of the law in this passage?  “Go and do the same.”  Go and do the same as what?  The same as the Priest?  The same as the Levite?  NO!  The same as the Good Samaritan.  It’s funny that the one person that the Jews would have avoided in their lives came to the rescue of this man.  The person with the least to offer gave what he could to the hurt and possibly dying man.  That doesn’t sound like an apathetic person to me.  This parable captures an attitude that we too should adopt in our lives.

Do you care enough?

Can we say that we would have done the same in our lives?  Are we people who care about more than just ourselves?  Are we willing to risk something not for ourselves but for someone else?  For a complete stranger?

You do for me!  (Jesus)

Matthew 25:34-40 (MSG)
34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Enter, you who are blessed by my Father! Take what’s coming to you in this kingdom. It’s been ready for you since the world’s foundation.
35 And here’s why: I was hungry and you fed me, I was thirsty and you gave me a drink, I was homeless and you gave me a room, 36 I was shivering and you gave me clothes, I was sick and you stopped to visit, I was in prison and you came to me.’ 37 “Then those ‘sheep’ are going to say, ‘Master, what are you talking about? When did we ever see you hungry and feed you, thirsty and give you a drink? 38 And when did we ever see you sick or in prison and come to you?’
39 40 Then the King will say, ‘I’m telling the solemn truth: Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me—you did it to me
.’

Do care enough?  Do you care at all for others or those around you?  Apathy is a deadly disease of the spirit, and if we let it loose in our lives we run the risk of not only missing out on blessings but much more.  We could lose our very souls.  That is a very, very scary proposition to think on!

Get on with it!

In a very real aspect, we can rid ourselves of this plague of Apathy by getting on with it!  What I mean is that we ought to stop talking about loving others or helping others by actually doing something about it!  Take action!  Roll your sleeves up and get to work!

“To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket- safe, dark, motionless, airless–it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable.”   -C.S. Lewis
